Luka Doncic Describes Emotions of Returning to Dallas in Lakers-Mavericks cover image

Coming to Dallas always feels like coming home for Luka Doncic.

Luka Doncic is in a rare position as far as NBA players go when it comes to his relationship with the Dallas Mavericks.

He was their best young player in a generation, a spiritual successor to Dirk Nowitzki as a European player that was lighting up the court in Dallas. He debuted with them, played for seven seasons as the face of the franchise and very well could have had his jersey in the rafters when all was said and done.

All of that changed last season in the blockbuster trade that sent Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis. Now, Doncic is playing like a MVP for a new team, but a big piece of his heart remains in Dallas. Now every time that Doncic and the Lakers play the Mavericks, Doncic feels like he's coming home.

Luka Speaks on His Time with Dallas

"I was here seven years. A lot of things happened, bad and good," Doncic said (via Spectrum SportsNet).

Doncic still has a home in Dallas and he mentioned how good it was to say to his cars whenever he gets the chance to be back in town. He also gets the chance to revisit all of the fans that celebrated him for the better part of a decade.

Doncic may have moved on to the Lakers, but it was a trade, not a choice, and it doesn't look like there's a thing in the world that could ever take him out of Dallas' good graces, unlike former general manager Nico Harrison, who orchestrated the trade that sent Doncic away.

Luka's Record Against Dallas

Another sign that Doncic loves coming back to Dallas is the play he plays for the Lakers against them. In the Lakers' 116-110 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday night, Doncic had himself a 33 point double-double, adding on 11 assists and eight rebounds.

Historically, Doncic has a perfect 4-0 record against the Mavericks while averaging 33 points, nine rebounds and 10 assists per game, surely reminding Dallas fans what they've lost with each dominant game.

Now, Doncic is building a new legacy with the Lakers. The team many have struggled lately, but they're still major playoff contenders and Luka himself is leading the entire NBA in scoring with 33.4 points per game while being third in assists with 8.7 per game.

He'll be an All-Star for the first time in his Lakers career and as he lights up the court every night Lakers fans are reminded of the shocking day they found out that one of the best players in the league was joining their team.

Still, no matter what Doncic accomplishes as a Lakers, the origin of his already stellar career was n Dallas, and he'll never forget his time there.
