The Los Angeles Lakers have been sitting near the top of the Western Conference standings all season, and a big reason for that is the dynamic that has developed between Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves in the backcourt. When asked about what makes the pairing work so well, Doncic kept his answer simple but telling.
"I think he's just a great player," Doncic said. "He's very talented offensively. He gets to his spots, he tricks the defense, and that's why he's a great player."
It may not have been the most elaborate answer, but the respect Luka has for his backcourt partner comes through clearly. And when you watch the two of them play together on a nightly basis, it's not hard to understand why the respect has developed so naturally over the course of this season.

Mandatory Credit: Petre Thomas-Imagn ImagesAustin Reaves has been one of the most consistent second options in the entire league since Doncic arrived in Los Angeles. He's averaging a career-high 23.7 points per game this season and has shown a consistent ability to create his own shot while also thriving off the gravity that Luka generates every time he touches the ball.
The spacing that Reaves provides is crucial to how the Lakers operate offensively. When defenses collapse on Doncic in the pick and roll or on the drive, Reaves has the IQ and the shooting ability to make them pay from the perimeter or the mid-range area.
What Doncic identified in Reaves' ability to get to spots and trick the defense is exactly what separates Reaves from a typical complementary player. He's not simply standing in the corner waiting for an open look, Austin is actively manipulating defenders and creating advantages for himself and for his teammates around him.
The kind of off-ball intelligence Reaves brings to the table is uncommon, and it pairs perfectly with a ball-dominant creator like Luka. The two of them give opposing defenses two big problems to solve at the same time, and most teams in the league haven't found a clean answer to that equation all season long.
LA is firmly positioned in the Western Conference playoff picture, and their ability to go far in the postseason will depend heavily on this backcourt continuing to produce at a high level. Luka is the engine, but Reaves is the player who makes the whole offensive process run efficiently and consistently.
When your best player calls his running mate a great player without hesitation, it tells you a lot about the trust that's been built with these guys. The Lakers have clearly found something worth believing in as we reach the final month of the regular season.
