Luka Doncic Explains How Lakers Have Improved After Heat Win
Nov 3, 2026 2:00 PM

Doncic is happy with where the Lakers are at seven games into the new season.

The Los Angeles Lakers have the fifth-highest-scoring offense (120.3 points per game) in the league at this juncture, and a lot of that is down to the brilliance of Luka Doncic.

Doncic is currently on an all-time heater, averaging 43.4 points over his last five games. The Lakers (6-2) are 3-2 in that stretch, but there is not much more the Slovenian superstar could have done to improve that record.

Luka has scored 40+ points in his last three outings, and the red-hot scoring run was kicked off by a 52-point eruption in the win against the Utah Jazz on Oct. 25.

However, despite his offensive mastery, Doncic refuses to take the bulk of the credit for the Lakers' strong start to the campaign, pointing to gradual improvement instead.

"I think [our offense] is just flowing," he said after Los Angeles took down the Miami Heat, 138-117, at home on Monday night.

"I think we're sharing the ball really well... At the beginning of the season, we didn't execute [against] double teams well. Today, I think we improved a lot. Everybody was in the right spots. So, it's not just me; I think it's everybody. Being in the right spots, being aggressive, and shooting with confidence."

Both things can be true: the Lakers have looked good to kick off their post-LeBron James era; however, Doncic has also been utterly spectacular.

He was at his tantalizing best against the Heat, posting an otherworldly 42 points, seven rebounds, and 13 assists with just two turnovers. Doncic shot 14-for-24 from the field, 6-for-15 from beyond the arc, and 8-for-10 from the line. He added two steals as his defensive contributions continue to ascend.

To do that in the second half of a back-to-back, after pouring in 45 points the night before in the 131-125 win against the Toronto Raptors, feels unreal. Like it shouldn't be happening. And yet it is, and it is being made to look easy — though of course it is far from it.

Still hunting for his first career MVP award, Doncic's campaign is off to a blistering start. He is averaging a near triple-double (37.7 points, 8.2 rebounds, 7.3 assists) through eight games.

The Lakers are now on a two-game win streak and sitting at 6-2. They are 4-1 at home.

Doncic is deservedly snatching all the headlines. However, the Lakers are looking like a really well-oiled machine around him, too.

Luka mentioned the 39 team assists against Miami as one of the keys to the Lakers' success. He thinks the team, as constructed, feels comfortable operating in such a fluid offensive system.

His teammates' numbers suggest that the claim is true.

Austin Reaves added 27 points and five assists against the Heat. Walker Kessler chipped in a big double-double (15 points, 15 rebounds). Sandro Mamukelashvili posted 13 points, three rebounds, four assists, and two steals off the bench.

The Lakers shot 57 percent from the field and 44 percent from three-point range, holding a 60-38 edge in paint points.
