Luka Magic was on full display once again on Saturday night against the Denver Nuggets as Luka Doncic sunk Denver with a game-winning baseline jumper.
With the game tied at 125 in overtime, Luka drove left after the Nuggets sent a double team, then his a step back jumper from 17 feet out on the baseline to put the Lakers up two with 0.5 seconds remaining.
The Nuggets missed a potential game-winning shot as Tim Hardaway Jr's 29-foot jumper was partially blocked by Doncic.
Speaking after the game, Luka was asked about his game-winner and what he saw.
"I saw the double coming. I rejected it, got to my left, which I've done a couple times throughout my career, and trusted the shot," he said.
Since Luka Doncic joined the Lakers in the shocking trade last season, the Lakers are 4-1 against the Nuggets when he's been in the lineup.
The Lakers, especially Anthony Davis, struggled against the Nuggets for years. Fans certainly remember the Nuggets knocking out the Lakers in back-to-back playoff series with the Lakers winning only once in the two series.
In three games against the Nuggets this season, Luka is averaging 31.7 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 10 assists. The Lakers are one of three teams Luka is averaging a triple double against this season. The other two are the Washington Wizards and Miami Heat, though he's played just one game against those two teams.
Luka always seems to relish the tough matchups, and though they rarely guard each other, playing against three-time MVP Nikola Jokic certainly brings out some of the best basketball from Luka.
The Lakers are battling the Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Houston Rockets in a tight Western Conference race for home court advantage in the first round. The win for the Lakers not only put them third in the West, but gave them the tiebreaker over the Nuggets.
The four teams are separated by a game and a half.
The Timberwolves have the toughest schedule remaining and the Rockets have the easiest.
The Lakers have the 15th toughest schedule remaining with two games left against the Oklahoma City Thunder and a game against the Detroit Pistons. Of the three teams they are battling, they'll only play the Rockets two more times the rest of the way. Coincidentally, those two teams will meet in the next two games, both of which take place in Houston.
