Sacramento Kings guard Dennis Schroder has been suspended for three games for confronting and attempting to strike Luka Doncic on December 28.
The incident occurred after the Kings vs. Los Angeles Lakers game, which was a victory for the Lakers, and the two were seen jawing on the court.
According to ESPN's Anthony Slater, Doncic told Schroder, he "should've signed that contract" in reference to the four-year, $82 million extension Schroder declined from the Lakers in 2021.
After the game, Schroder reportedly "left the visitors' locker room at Crypto.com Arena, spotted Doncic, and tempers flared again inside the tunnel across from the home bench.
"Forty minutes after the buzzer, Schroder went after Doncic, telling Doncic that he can't call him a "b----" on the court and pretend everything is fine off the court. The NBA concluded that Schroder attempted to strike Doncic."
Lakers center Deandre Ayton tried to drag Schroder away while Doncic eventually exited.
Schroder played for the Lakers in 2020-21, starting 61 games and averaging 15.4 points and 5.8 assists per game and shooting 43.7% shooting from the field and 33.5% on 3-pointers.
In March 2021, the Lakers reportedly offered a four-year deal worth over $80 million, but Schroder declined in order to pursue a bigger deal in free agency. After struggling in the playoffs,
Schroder signed a one-year deal worth $5.9 million with the Boston Celtics in the 2021 offseason.
In 2022, when he returned to the Lakers, Schroder claimed he was never offered the four-year deal from the Lakers in 2021.
Schroder has bounced around in the league since his initial stint with the Lakers. After signing with Boston, he was traded to Houston. After his second run with the Lakers, he signed a two-year deal with the Toronto Raptors in the 2023 offseason. He was traded to the Brooklyn Nets in February 2024, the Golden State Warriors in December 2024, and then the Detroit Pistons in February 2025.
In the 2025 offseason, he landed on the Kings as a sign and trade, putting him on his tenth team in 12 seasons.
After news came down of Schroder attempting to strike Doncic and his subsequent suspension, Schroder posted "Attempting" with an eyes emoji and a laughing emoji.
During the game, the two were seen trash-talking at various points. In one moment, while the Kings were at the free-throw line, Doncic and Schroder bumped into each other, and Schroder said something to him. Doncic made the "only talking" gesture with his hand
The Kings and Lakers will meet again on Monday, but Schroder will not play due to his suspension.
