One of LeBron James' biggest rivals has some thoughts about his potential retirement.
Former Boston Celtics star and Hall of Famer Paul Pierce believes LeBron James should retire this offseason, citing the criticism the 41-year-old star continues to receive despite still performing at an elite level late in his career.
Pierce made the comments during a discussion with fellow Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett on their podcast ‘Ticket and the Truth’ while reflecting on James’ future following the Los Angeles Lakers’ exit playoff loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
“I think LeBron James should retire,” Pierce said. “Just like for the simple fact that at his age, he still receives the criticism that he still does.”
Garnett appeared surprised by the take and questioned his former teammate immediately.
Pierce doubled down and argued that other NBA legends were not criticized as heavily toward the end of their careers.
“No, the greats weren’t getting this criticism late,” Pierce said. “Nobody was criticizing Kobe when he wasn’t going to the playoffs in his last year. They was just enjoying his moments. Like the same with Jordan and Washington.”
Analyzing LeBron's Performance at Age 41
The comments quickly sparked debate among NBA fans, especially considering James remains one of the league’s most productive players after finishing his 23rd NBA season, averaging 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists in 60 games.
James continued to play at an All-NBA level while helping lead the Lakers through an injury-filled and inconsistent season in JJ Redick’s second season as head coach.
Despite the Lakers’ disappointing playoff exit, James still showed flashes of dominance throughout the year while moving from the third option to the third after late-season injuries to Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves before the postseason.
What Could LeBron James Be Thinking?
Retirement speculation surrounding James has become an annual topic over the last several seasons, but the four-time NBA champion has repeatedly left the door open for continuing his career.
James has also spoken publicly about his love for the game and desire to compete as long as he has the passion for the process.

Pierce’s argument focused less on James’ production and more on the expectations that continue to surround him. While many aging superstars are celebrated simply for extending their careers, James is still judged by championship standards every season because he still has Father Time beat.
For now, James has not announced any plans regarding retirement, leaving the Lakers and the rest of the NBA waiting for another major offseason decision.
