LeBron's agent and long-time friend talks about the comparison between James and one of sports' most influential figures
As LeBron James continues to add to one of the most accomplished careers in NBA history, debates surrounding his legacy remain a constant topic among fans and analysts.
Whether discussing championships, records, or his place in the GOAT conversation, James’ impact on basketball is undeniable.
However, longtime friend and agent Rich Paul believes LeBron’s legacy goes beyond trophies and accolades.
Speaking on Game Over—a show between Paul and Max Kellerman—Paul explained why he has always viewed James as a “people’s champion,” comparing the Los Angeles Lakers star to legendary boxer Muhammad Ali.
“If you win one time in Cleveland, there’s nothing else to be done,” Paul said. “The idea of going back home and winning one. I always looked at LeBron to be more of what I would say the People's champ, like Muhammad Ali, was. Even when he lost, I feel like people really embraced him.”
His Time in Cleveland
Paul’s comments point directly to one of the most significant chapters of James' return to Cleveland in 2014.
After leaving the Cavaliers in 2010 to join the Miami Heat, James faced intense criticism from fans across the league. While he won two NBA championships in Miami and established himself as the best player in basketball, many felt his legacy in Cleveland remained unfinished.
That changed in historic fashion during the 2016 NBA Finals.
Facing a Golden State Warriors team that had just completed a record-setting 73-win regular season, James led the Cavaliers back from a 3-1 series deficit, something no team had ever done in the NBA Finals.

For Paul, that title elevated James into a different category.
Rather than being remembered solely for championships or statistics, he believes James became a figure embraced by fans because of what he represented to his hometown and to basketball as a whole.

While the GOAT debate may never have a unanimous answer, Paul believes LeBron’s ability to connect with people through both triumphs and setbacks is what truly defines his legacy, much like Ali’s impact transcended the sport of boxing.

James now enters the offseason as a restricted free agent, with the Lakers holding the right to match any offer sheet under NBA rules.
At 41 years old and heading into a potential 24th season, retirement also remains a possibility, though a return to Los Angeles is still in play.
His decision comes at an important roster moment for the Lakers, who are also expected to prioritize re-signing Austin Reaves this summer.
