Walker Kessler knows the Lakers made a major investment to acquire him, and he's ready to reward that faith with everything he's got.
The Los Angeles Lakers made one of the biggest moves of the offseason when they acquired center Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz, signaling their commitment to strengthening the middle of the floor for years to come.
Between the draft capital surrendered and the long-term contract extension that followed, the organization made it clear that Kessler is expected to be a foundational piece in L.A.
Kessler understands exactly what that investment represents.
"It definitely makes you feel a certain way when you know an organization believes in you," Kessler said. "And I think what they've invested, they're showing that belief in a monetary value, not just with money, but like you said, assets. And for me, I'm somebody that if I know that they have that belief in me, I'm gonna run through a brick wall for them."
The Lakers reportedly sent multiple future first-round picks and draft-pick swaps to Utah in exchange for the 24-year-old center before signing him to a four-year, $130 million contract extension.
The aggressive move reflected the organization's belief that Kessler can anchor the defense while growing alongside Luka Dončić and the team's young core.
A Defensive Anchor With Room to Grow
Kessler has quickly developed into one of the NBA's most effective interior defenders since entering the league as the 22nd overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft.
His production had to improve every season when he was on the floor in Utah.
During the 2024-25 campaign, which is arguably his best season as a pro, Kessler posted 11.1 points, 12.2 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game as the Jazz's starting center.
Although his 2025-26 season was cut short after just five games because of a shoulder injury that eventually required surgery, Kessler made the most of his time on the court. He averaged 14.4 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks while shooting 70.3% from the field, showcasing continued growth on both ends of the floor.
Across four NBA seasons, Kessler owns career averages of 9.5 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks while shooting better than 68% from the field.
Ready to Reward the Lakers' Faith
For Kessler, the trade was about more than changing teams. It was confirmation that one of the league's most recognizable franchises views him as a cornerstone.
His comments reflect the type of mentality the Lakers hoped to acquire alongside his talent. Rather than focusing on the pressure that comes with a major trade and a lucrative contract, Kessler emphasized his desire to repay the organization's confidence through effort and commitment.
His rim protection, rebounding, and efficiency around the basket address one of L.A.'s biggest needs entering the new season. Surrounded by elite playmakers such as Dončić and an improved supporting cast, Kessler could be in a position for the best season of his career.
If his words are any indication, the young center is embracing the expectations that come with wearing a Lakers uniform. After seeing the franchise invest heavily in him, Kessler is determined to reward that faith every time he steps on the court.
