LeBron James is headed to Philadelphia, but his son Bronny James is staying in Los Angeles as the Lakers continue investing in his development.
LeBron James has made his decision, and for the first time in more than a decade, the Los Angeles Lakers will have to move forward without him.
James is signing with the Philadelphia 76ers on a two-year, $8 million contract with a player option, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Friday, which shook the NBA offseason.
The move ends the speculation surrounding where the four-time NBA champion would play next and creates an entirely different situation for his son, Bronny James.
Despite the father-and-son connection, Bronny is not following LeBron to Philadelphia.
Bronny James Is Staying With Lakers
Rich Paul, the agent for both LeBron and Bronny, said the two are “not a package deal," according to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne. There is no current plan or request for Bronny to join his father in Philadelphia.
That distinction matters for the Lakers.
Bronny recently had his contract guaranteed by L.A., according to sources cited by Shelburne, and the organization continues to have a strong belief in his potential.
His future with the Lakers will now be evaluated independently from his father’s career as he enters an option year this season, a team option.
Bronny enters his third NBA season after appearing in 69 games over his first two years. He averaged 2.7 points, 0.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists while shooting 37.4% from the field and 34.8% from 3-point range during that span.
There were flashes of progress during the 2025-26 season. Bronny appeared in 42 games and improved his shooting efficiency, averaging 2.9 points, 0.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists while shooting 40.9% from the field and 38.6% from 3-point range.
The numbers remain modest, but his role has never been about immediate production alone.

Lakers Must Develop Bronny Without LeBron
LeBron’s departure changes the environment around Bronny.
For the past two seasons, Bronny has had the unique experience of sharing an NBA locker room with his father. That gave him access to one of the greatest players in basketball history while also placing constant attention on his every move.
Now, that dynamic is gone.

The organization’s decision to guarantee his contract also suggests the team sees enough value in continuing that process.
Bronny’s next step will be earning consistent minutes and proving he can contribute beyond his shooting. His defensive instincts, ability to make plays and development as a ballhandler will remain important parts of his progression.
For LeBron, the move to Philadelphia begins a new chapter late in his career. For Bronny, it creates an opportunity to build his own NBA identity in L.A.
The Lakers may no longer have LeBron, but they still have a young player whose development they believe is worth continuing to invest in.
