The path for Luka Doncic to pass him on the franchise list is real, and it happens because of June.

The Lakers officially belong to Luka Doncic now, and the fun question is where he can land in franchise history.

LeBron James left Los Angeles this summer on a two-year deal with the 76ers, and he left behind a championship and eight seasons of heavy production.

Doncic is 27, locked in on a $165 million extension, and coming off a scoring title.

The ingredients are all there, and the franchise history he is chasing is sitting right in front of him.

What LeBron Leaves Behind

The LeBron chapter is bigger than some fans want to admit.

He played eight seasons as a Laker, appearing in 479 games while averaging 25.9 points, and he delivered the 2020 championship against Miami.

He also spent 15 of his 23 seasons elsewhere, which is the honest asterisk on his Lakers standing.

Magic Johnson won five titles without ever wearing another uniform, and Kobe Bryant won five across a 20-year career spent entirely in Los Angeles.

LeBron's Lakers résumé is one great peak with a lot of very good years around it, and that is the opening Doncic should attack.

This franchise measures its legends in banners first and everything else second, so the door is open wider than the raw numbers suggest.

Where Doncic Already Stands

Doncic arrived in the February 2025 trade that sent Anthony Davis to Dallas, and last season he led the league at 33.5 points per game across 64 games while adding 7.7 rebounds and 8.3 assists.

He has already told the front office what he wants, since ESPN reported his directive to find an "A-list" center, and the team responded by trading its 2031 and 2033 first-round picks in the Walker Kessler deal and surrounding him with Sandro Mamukelashvili, Quentin Grimes and Collin Sexton.

Doncic has said he is confident in the new-look roster, and teammates have been open about what Kessler brings to the interior.

This roster was built to his specifications, which is something LeBron never quite had here.

The Missing Line on the Résumé

Doncic needs a ring, and then he needs years.

One championship would match LeBron's Lakers total by age 28 or 29, with a decade of prime left to stack seasons the way Magic and Kobe did.

Keep piling up scoring titles and All-NBA seasons in this uniform, and the volume argument takes care of itself, because Doncic will have played his entire prime here while LeBron arrived with most of his career already behind him.

The supporting moves matter too, and depth signings like Matisse Thybulle suggest the front office understands a superstar's window is a terrible thing to waste.

Two deep playoff runs and one parade would flip this conversation from projection to fact, and nothing about last season says that is out of reach.

The honest answer to the question in the headline is that the list was never really about statistics in the first place, because the players at the top of it are remembered for what happened in June, and everything Doncic still needs can only be won there.
