Collin Sexton saw the Lakers as an opportunity to compete on a major stage and use his relentless style to influence winning.

Collin Sexton did not sign with the Los Angeles Lakers simply because of the franchise’s history or the attention that accompanies wearing purple and gold.

The veteran guard was attracted to the opportunity to compete for a winning team and carve out a meaningful role on a reshaped roster.

“I would say just opportunity to win, being on big stage and being in the situation where I can try to come in and impact winning,” Sexton said. “I feel like I’ve been on different teams where it’s just been a lot tougher.”

Sexton has established himself as an aggressive scorer who plays with consistent energy. Now, he will be asked to turn those qualities into contributions for a Lakers team carrying serious expectations.

A Needed Opportunity to Win

Winning consistently has been difficult to find during Sexton’s NBA career. He has proven that he can score, attack the paint and create offense, but he has not yet played in a postseason game.

That history helps explain why Los Angeles appealed to him during free agency.

“Of course, the want to win, it’s always been there,” Sexton said. “But it’s definitely tough to win in the NBA. It’s a hard thing and each and every night we’re playing against the best of the best.”

Sexton will not have to carry the offense with Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves leading the backcourt. Instead, he can give the Lakers another downhill attacker and energetic ballhandler, particularly when one of their primary creators is resting.

His scoring mentality could be valuable for a second unit that needs someone willing to pressure the defense. Sexton’s ability to change the pace of a game gives head coach JJ Redick an option who brings a different style from the team’s starters.

Sexton Embraces Lakers’ Expectations

Playing for the Lakers comes with attention that few NBA markets can match. Every performance is scrutinized, and role players can quickly become central figures in the conversation surrounding the team.

Sexton views that stage as part of the opportunity rather than something to avoid.

“I think just being on this stage and being able to impact winning each and every day, and what I bring to the team and bring to the game,” Sexton said. “I feel like I just fit right in.”

He has also been encouraged by his introduction to the organization.

“It’s been amazing,” Sexton said. “Everyone’s just pretty much open and welcoming, and it’s been good to talk to the coaches, talk to the players. It’s a whole bunch of new faces, so we’re all learning each and every day together.”

That final point is important. Sexton is not entering a finished product. The Lakers added several new players and must determine how their pieces complement Dončić and Reaves.

Sexton’s exact role will be settled through training camp, but his motivation is already clear. He chose Los Angeles because he wanted pressure, opportunity and a chance to play meaningful basketball.

The Lakers now need his intensity to translate into winning minutes.
