Jaden Hardy’s reunion with Luka Doncic gives the Lakers a familiar connection and a young guard eager to build on it.
Jaden Hardy already knows what it feels like to share the floor with Luka Doncic. As he prepares for his first season with the Los Angeles Lakers, the young guard remembers more than the passes that found him.
He remembers the encouragement.
Hardy’s experience playing alongside Doncic in Dallas gives him a connection to the Lakers’ franchise player before training camp begins. His recent comments also offer another perspective on how Doncic approaches working with younger teammates.
“He used to always instill confidence into the young players, tell them to keep going,” Hardy said.

Familiarity could help Hardy’s transition
Playing with Doncic requires more than waiting for an open shot.
Teammates must recognize when to space the floor, when to cut and when to stay available as a possession develops. A defender turning toward Doncic can create a brief opening, and taking advantage of it requires a quick decision.
Hardy should have a useful starting point because of their time together in Dallas. That familiarity could help him settle into possessions without needing every read explained from scratch.
It also gives him reason to trust that an opportunity will come after a mistake. Young guards can become hesitant when a missed shot or turnover threatens their minutes. Encouragement from a team’s best player can help them stay aggressive without abandoning the offense.
Still, comfort with Doncic will only carry Hardy so far.
The Lakers need players who can execute their assignments consistently. Hardy must show that he can contribute when his shot is falling and remain useful when it is not.
His reunion creates an opportunity. His performance will determine what follows.

Hardy joins a backcourt that includes Doncic, Austin Reaves and Collin Sexton, leaving him with competition for opportunities.
His clearest path is to provide scoring while making sound decisions. That means attacking an available opening, moving the ball when a defender closes it and avoiding possessions that become difficult shots without involving teammates.
Defense will also matter. A reserve guard who scores but repeatedly loses his assignment can make lineup decisions harder, especially alongside teammates already carrying substantial offensive responsibilities.
Hardy does not need to duplicate Doncic’s playmaking. He needs to complement it and give the Lakers dependable possessions when called upon.
Training camp will help establish whether that contribution comes alongside Doncic, in reserve combinations or through a more limited role.
The encouraging part is that Hardy already understands something about his new teammate’s leadership. He has experienced Doncic’s willingness to build confidence in younger players.
Now he has another chance to turn that confidence into consistent production.
