Kevon Looney believes Luka Dončić’s decision to host his Lakers teammates in Slovenia revealed how seriously the superstar takes his leadership responsibilities.

Luka Dončić did more than organize workouts when he brought his Los Angeles Lakers teammates to Slovenia for a four-day minicamp.

According to new Lakers center Kevon Looney, the trip offered the team an opportunity to understand its franchise player away from basketball. It also showed Looney that Dončić is prepared to embrace the responsibilities that accompany leading one of the NBA’s most prominent organizations.

“I’ve been in the league for a while, and that was my first time doing something like that, to go into somebody’s country and bring us all out there and spend that much time together,” Looney said. “I never did that before.”

Looney entered the NBA in 2015 and won three championships during his decade with the Golden State Warriors. He has experienced lengthy playoff runs, shared a locker room with established leaders and seen what is required to build a championship culture.

That background gives additional weight to his description of the Slovenia trip as a first-of-its-kind experience.

Dončić Opens Up to Teammates

Dončić gave his teammates a look at the environment that helped shape him before he became an international star. The Lakers were able to spend time together away from Los Angeles while learning more about their new leader’s background and personality.

“So it just shows his character, showing that he really wants to win,” Looney said. “He wants people to know his background, why he is, how he is. And I think we did a good job of that.”

That type of personal connection could be especially important for a Lakers roster featuring several new players. Chemistry will not be created by one trip, but Dončić gave the group an early foundation before training camp.

It was also a meaningful gesture from a player whose leadership style is often evaluated through his visible emotions during games. Looney came away focused on what Dončić displayed behind the scenes.

Lakers Ready to Follow Dončić

The strongest part of Looney’s comments was his declaration that the Lakers are prepared to follow Dončić.

“You know he’s a great player and a great leader, and he likes to show what he can do on the court,” Looney said. “And we got to see his personality off the court. So it was great. You know, we’re gonna follow him.”

Dončić’s talent has never been the question. The next stage of his Lakers tenure will be defined by whether he can set the tone for an entire organization and elevate the players around him.

Organizing the Slovenia minicamp does not guarantee postseason success, but it was a purposeful first step. Dončić invested his time and resources into bringing the team together before the season demanded it.

For a reshaped Lakers group trying to establish its identity, that is exactly the kind of initiative it needs from its best player.
