The Lakers are moving on from Dalton Knecht as they trim their roster before the start of the regular season.
The Los Angeles Lakers waived Dalton Knecht on Monday, the team announced, ending his tenure two years after selecting him with the No. 17 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.
The decision brings the Lakers from 16 players on standard contracts to the regular-season limit of 15. Knecht, whom the organization selected with the No. 17 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, becomes the departure that resolves an overcrowded roster entering opening week.
For Knecht, it is an abrupt ending to a Lakers career that began with an opportunity to provide outside shooting alongside established stars. For L.A., it is another personnel decision in an offseason that substantially changed the supporting cast around Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves.
The Lakers open their season Wednesday against the Golden State Warriors, with their attention now shifting from roster cuts to determining how their remaining pieces fit together.

Knecht entered the league with a clear offensive calling card. His shooting offered a way to contribute without needing to control possessions, a potentially useful skill on a team built around players who draw defensive attention.
However, that skill alone did not secure his place as the Lakers changed their personnel.
Head coach JJ Redick addressed Knecht’s circumstances before the preseason finale, pointing to the difference between the roster Knecht joined and the group assembled for this season.
“The team changed. The needs changed. The fit changed,” Redick said.
Redick also said Knecht had improved during his two seasons, while acknowledging that the number of wings on the roster left him facing a difficult situation.
That distinction matters when evaluating the decision. A player can improve individually while his opportunities decrease because the team has added alternatives or changed what it asks of the position.
The Lakers’ wing competition included Quentin Grimes, Ziaire Williams, Matisse Thybulle and Jake LaRavia. With Dončić and Reaves handling much of the offense, the supporting group must complement them through defense, movement and decisions away from the ball.
Knecht needed a dependable role within that group. The waiver decision means he will have to pursue that opportunity elsewhere.
Lakers Set Their Roster Before Opening Night
Removing Knecht settles the immediate numbers problem, but it does not answer every question about the Lakers’ rotation.
Redick still must establish which combinations work best around Dončić, Reaves and Walker Kessler, including how to distribute minutes among the remaining perimeter players. Making the roster and earning consistent playing time remain separate steps.
For the front office, moving on also closes the book on a first-round investment before Knecht’s third regular season with the team.
The Lakers will proceed with the players they retained, while Knecht’s next opportunity will depend on finding a team with room for his offensive strengths.
His departure is a reminder of how quickly an NBA role can change. Two years after the Lakers used a first-round selection on him, their opening-night plans will move forward without him.
