Luka Dončić’s reported conditioning gives Lakers fans another reason for optimism after an injury cut short his dominant season.

Luka Dončić already showed what he can do as the centerpiece of the Los Angeles Lakers’ offense. The next step is staying on the floor long enough to carry that production into the postseason.

An encouraging report about his conditioning gives fans a reason to believe that possibility is within reach entering the 2026-27 season.

Speaking on ESPN’s “The Hoop Collective,” Tim MacMahon described Dončić as being noticeably leaner heading into training camp.

“I do think Luka’s as lean as he’s been since his rookie year,” MacMahon said.

That observation does not guarantee better health or establish an official playing weight. It does, however, add an encouraging development to a season in which the Lakers will need their leading scorer available for their biggest games.

Dončić Already Established an Elite Standard

Dončić led the NBA with 33.5 points per game last season while averaging 8.3 assists. His offensive production was enough to keep opposing defenses focused on him every night, whether he was creating his own shot or finding an open teammate.

The disappointment came with how his season ended. A Grade 2 left hamstring strain suffered April 2 sidelined him down the stretch and left the Lakers navigating the playoffs without their primary offensive creator.

For fans, that makes availability the most meaningful part of the upcoming season. Another scoring title would be impressive, but having Dončić healthy when playoff defenses tighten would matter considerably more.

His game does not depend entirely on speed or explosiveness. He creates advantages through positioning, changes of pace and an ability to recognize defensive coverages before they fully develop.

Still, improved conditioning could help him sustain those demands throughout games. Repeatedly attacking the paint, handling pressure and making decisions late in possessions requires energy, even for a player whose skill allows him to dictate the tempo.

The same applies defensively. The Lakers need Dončić to finish possessions, recover after screens and remain engaged when opponents try to involve him in the action.

The Next Test Is Sustaining It

The strongest reason for optimism is that Dončić does not need to reinvent his offensive game. He has already demonstrated the scoring and passing ability required to lead an elite attack.

What fans should watch is whether his preparation translates into consistent movement and effort over the course of the schedule.

Can he keep attacking late in games? Can he recover defensively after a difficult offensive possession? Can he maintain his conditioning through travel, short turnarounds and stretches with limited practice time?

Those questions will provide a better measure of progress than training camp photographs alone.

There also needs to be perspective. A leaner appearance cannot predict whether a player will avoid another injury, and the Lakers will still need to manage workloads appropriately.

But entering camp with encouraging reports about his preparation is a positive starting point. For a player who already produces at a scoring-title level, even modest improvements in endurance and consistency could have a substantial effect.

Lakers fans have seen the production. This season, the hope is that Dončić can pair it with the availability needed to determine how far L.A. can go.
