The Lakers’ reported belief in Bronny James gives them reason to remain patient, but his next step must come through consistent production.
Bronny James still has to prove he can earn a regular NBA role. The Los Angeles Lakers, however, reportedly see reasons to keep investing in his development.
According to Dan Woike of The Athletic, the organization’s interest in James extends beyond the opportunity it once had to pair him with his father. His athletic ability, approach to work and response to constant attention have helped sustain the team’s belief.
“The belief in Bronny James the person/player is genuine,” Woike wrote in a Reddit question-and-answer session.
Woike acknowledged that the Lakers understood drafting James would make LeBron James happy. But he also pointed to the younger guard’s athleticism and length, along with the work ethic he has displayed inside the organization.
Those qualities give L.A. a reasonable foundation for optimism. They also establish what James needs to build upon as he works toward a larger role.
A Defensive Role Offers a Path
James does not need to become a high-volume scorer to give the Lakers useful minutes. A more realistic path would involve defending opposing guards, making open shots and keeping the offense moving.
His athleticism and length could help him pressure ballhandlers and contest shots. Still, physical tools only matter if he consistently turns them into effective possessions.
That means navigating screens, staying disciplined against changes of direction and recognizing when to help without abandoning a shooter. NBA guards can punish even brief lapses, making those details essential for a player trying to establish himself.
Offensively, James needs to make defenses respect him away from the ball. If opponents can leave him unguarded, they can send more attention toward the Lakers’ primary creators.
Reliable shooting would make it easier to use him alongside those players. Quick decisions would help, too. Taking an available shot, attacking a closeout or making the next pass can all contribute without requiring him to control the offense.
Patience Still Needs Results
The most encouraging part of Woike’s assessment may be the organization’s view of James’ daily habits.
A young player cannot control every opportunity he receives. He can control his preparation and how he responds when minutes are limited. The Lakers’ reported appreciation for James’ work suggests they see someone willing to keep addressing his weaknesses.
That should earn him continued coaching and development opportunities. It should also come with clear expectations.
The next step is demonstrating that his progress can hold up against NBA competition. Strong practices matter, but earning a dependable role requires producing when opponents are actively testing his limitations.
L.A. can remain optimistic while evaluating him honestly. Belief in his potential does not require declaring him ready for a rotation spot.
For James, the opportunity is to turn the qualities the Lakers already value into skills they can consistently use.
