The Orlando Magic have one more chance to close out the Detroit Pistons in a pivotal Game 7 on Sunday.
ORLANDO — The Orlando Magic will face the Detroit Pistons on Sunday in a sudden-death Game 7 after squandering a 3-1 lead, and guard Desmond Bane did not mince words when talking about his team's epic collapse in Game 6.
"I think they were just playing more desperate than us," Bane said. "Playing harder than us. You know, whether it was offensive rebounds or heating up their pressure to get steals. You know, really kind of took us out of our stuff. Messed with our flow."
Instead of protecting a 24-point lead and advancing to the Eastern Conference Semifinals for the first time in 16 years, the Magic proceeded to let their lead slip away by going on a historic cold streak in which they did not make a shot for 45 minutes of real time.
By the end of the game, Orlando scored just 19 points in the second half.
"I mean, it's going to be hard to win games. You score 19 points in a half," Bane said. "And I thought a lot of that was because they came out with more energy than us in the second half."
For Bane and his teammates, what could have been a celebratory night became a hard lesson to learn from.
"Yeah, I mean, that's got to be our growth," Bane said. "You know, in evolution as a team, you know, you've seen that in spurts throughout the season. And, you know, we've tried to grow from it, tried to nip it in the bud. But, you know, your habits always catch up to you."
Additionally, it was a game where disorganization contributed to the egregious lack of shooting.
"Yeah, I think that's when we got to like settle in and get organized, get back to what was working," Bane said. "You know, I thought that we kind of slowed the game down. And, you know, that's not really what was working in the first half. You know, we were playing fast and moving the ball side to side.
"A lot of different guys getting involved. And in that second half, we we kind of slowed down and started match up hunting. And, you know, it's tough."
Despite the pain from the Game 6 loss, Bane understands that the focus must shift to Game 7 on Sunday.
"Yeah, I mean, I think when you wake up tomorrow, you know, it's a new day," he said. "Come in, watch the film, see where we can get better. And we got another chance to go do it. You know, it's not over with.
We got another game in this series," he added. "So, we'll go and attack it."
