The Jamahl Mosley era is over in Orlando. Now, it is on Jeff Weltman to fill the head coaching vacancy with the right fit.
The Orlando Magic chose to fire coach Jamahl Mosley following a 3-1 collapse to the Detroit Pistons in the first round of the NBA Playoffs, and now, it is on President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman to make the correct hire to fill the vacancy left by Mosley.
On a recent episode of the Full Court Magic podcast, Don Strouble of Roundtable Sports talked about Weltman’s decision to fire Mosley and why his track record as an executive gives cause for skepticism.
"And so, you know, this was just something that I think unless Mosley and the Magic were able to get through that Pistons series, this is what was going to happen in terms of him losing his job, and it did," Strouble said. "Now, I thought because of the proactive paralysis, I guess I'll put it that way, of Jeff Weltman, you know, we've seen it time and time again through trade deadlines, through summertime acquisitions. You know, Desmond Bane, that was like the real first big surprise, you know, by Weltman.
It seemed like, you know, the KCP deal was big in a sense of like, you're getting a 3-and-D veteran who's been there and done that; won championships. But it flopped. And a lot of his past moves flopped. And to give away four first-round picks for Desmond Bane, and KCP and Cole Anthony, all to bring in one player, that was a risk."
"And it paid off for the most part, Strouble continued. "You know, Bane played well. You know, he had his moments where it wasn't looking great, especially in the beginning of the season. So, you know, Weltman's decision to fire Mosley, it shows that he wants the team to improve. But as I talked about in the last podcast episode, it was a lot of, you know, repetitive excuse-making, focusing on one excuse: the injuries. And again, while there is merit to the injury excuse, because it was very real, it'll be interesting to see what Weltman does beyond hiring a new coach.
Because he's got to land this coaching hire, especially after the DeVos family and, you know, the Magic organization decided to extend Weltman quietly in the middle or earlier in the regular season around the time when the Magic were looking, you know, pretty good during that NBA Cup run. And so, he's here to stay, at least for now, and he's going to have to prove that he can nail this coaching hire."
