A hypothetical blockbuster trade swapping Paolo Banchero for the Greek Freak faces harsh reality as analysts question fit, shooting woes, and Orlando’s appeal following a postseason collapse.

A hypothetical player-for-player swap sending Paolo Banchero to Milwaukee for Giannis Antetokounmpo has been discussed this off-season as a possibly mutually beneficial solution for months. In theory, the Bucks would acquire a younger star under long-term contract control, while the Orlando Magic would resolve their positional fit issues with Franz Wagner and potentially outrun impending salary cap apron penalties by consolidating salary into a single superstar deal.

However, CBS Sports placed the Magic at No. 17 in its odds to land the two-time MVP, reflecting the significant hurdles facing such a transaction. The scenario relies entirely on Antetokounmpo agreeing to remain in Orlando long-term, an outlook that appears increasingly far-fetched following the Magic’s 3-1 first-round playoff collapse against the Detroit Pistons. Furthermore, the deal assumes Antetokounmpo would provide a cleaner fit alongside Wagner than Banchero does, a premise that conflicts with reality, given that Antetokounmpo is a more ball-dominant player with lower perimeter shooting percentages. Executing this trade would require substantial roster restructuring, an overhaul that Antetokounmpo likely would not be eager to permit.

“Paolo Banchero for Antetokounmpo has been bandied about as a possibly mutually beneficial solution for months now,” CBS Sports wrote. “Milwaukee gets a younger star under contract. Orlando solves its fit problems with Franz Wagner and potentially gets out ahead of its impending apron issues by consolidating salary in the deal. The hypothetical still relies on Antetokounmpo agreeing to stay in Orlando, and that seems far-fetched after the Magic's 3-1 playoff collapse against Detroit.”

This is a Magic team that’s struggled shooting the ball at a consistent level for the past few seasons, and Banchero is a better shooter than Antetokounmpo is.

“It also assumes Antetokounmpo would be a better fit next to Wagner than Banchero is,” the article added. “Which doesn't really make sense since he's an even more ball-dominant player who shoots even worse. This would require pretty substantial roster changes that Antetokounmpo likely wouldn't be all that eager to let them.
