Front office connections and superstar rumors have sparked a frenzy, but high trade costs and injury risks could prevent a blockbuster deal for the Milwaukee icon.
As the NBA offseason continues for every team except the two remaining in the Finals, the Orlando Magic have plenty of decisions to make following the hiring of Sean Sweeney as the franchise's new head ach. Among the biggest storylines surrounding the organization is the possibility of pursuing two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo if he becomes available on the trade market.co
On a recent episode of Full Court Magic Podcast, hosts Don Strouble and Andrew Cherico discussed the realism of a potential blockbuster move for the NBA champion, debating whether acquiring Antetokounmpo would truly benefit Orlando and if the Magic should be willing to make the sacrifices necessary to get a deal done.
Connecting Ties:
"There’s been around the NBA just murmurs of chatter. Maybe the Orlando Magic are potential suitors for Giannis Antetokounmpo. And there is some background merit. You have the foundational ties with Jeff Weltman, with John Hammond on the Bucks' executive staff, so he played a huge part in getting Giannis to the Bucks. Where there’s smoke, there can be fire, but I don’t know if it’s any more than just a small flame at this point. I don’t agree with the idea that Giannis is coming to Orlando."
The Big Risk:
"To me, it’ll be risky. It’s a very risky move for the Magic. Giannis is entering his late prime now. If you trade—because if you think about it—the Magic don’t have any more draft picks. They traded the majority of their draft capital last offseason. You're talking about four first-round picks for Desmond Bane and another abundance of second-round picks to trade up for Noah Penda. The Magic just don’t have that capital now to move big pieces for big players. They put all their eggs in one basket for Desmond Bane. But for Giannis, if they wanted to make a significant move like that, they would need to trade either, in my opinion, Suggs or Franz Wagner. Blowing up the core of this team doesn’t seem ideal. I just don’t see them giving up on two young, ascending players for a guy who’s on the wrong end of his prime and is also injury-prone, with most of his game relying on his freakish athleticism."
Is it a Rental?
"It’s a fun story hypothetically, but is it the right move for this franchise? No, it’s not, because you get Giannis, who would be a rental. Any team that goes after him this offseason to pry him away from the Bucks, they are doing it in the hopes that he signs an extension because, as of right now, he is a rental. I believe after this coming season he can bounce in free agency if he wants. You’re not trading away your franchise player and homegrown guy, Paolo Banchero, for that. Franz Wagner, a little more leeway for discussion there, but again, I’m with you. The Desmond Bane trade was the Magic’s big swing. It already happened last summer, that’s it. I don’t think we’re seeing another one, so the Giannis rumors need to be put to bed."
