Orlando Magic rookie Jase Richardson had a scary fall Saturday night in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in Los Angeles

Orlando Magic rookie Jase Richardson did not have the best of debuts in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest during All-Star Saturday Night in Los Angeles.

Richardson had a scary fall after colliding with the side of the backboard. There was no serious injury but many fans made jokes about the dunk attempt. Even Richardson joined in on the ribbing.

Here's what he posted on X in response to video of the fall: "I've been crying laughing for the past hour." That was followed with a crying emoji.

Richardson explained what happened during the postgame interview. It was just a miscalculation.

Because of the scare from the fall, Richardson decided to move from that dunk.

"Yeah, I think after taking a fall like that I just had to move on from that dunk," Richardson said. "So it is what it is."

He said it was difficult choosing which dunks to use early and those to save for later in the competition. It was most likely a rookie mistake, something he hopes to do better should he return to participate in the event in the future.

"It's definitely tough because mainly this isn't really like something I was really expecting to do anyways," Richardson said. "But it's hard to choose what dunk you can do, especially given some people already doing one of the dunks you probably had in store. So it's just kind of hard to select."

Overall, Richardson enjoyed his first All-Star appearance. One of his goals was avoiding to make it about his father, Jason, who won a slam dunk title during his playing career.

"Nah, I think for me, I'm trying to steer away from that," Richardson said. "I'm just trying to, you know, I just want to do the contest and try to make it my own thing instead of everything have to do with my father. So I just wanted to come out here, have a good time. I did. That's all that matters."

The weekend conclude with tonight's All-Star Game at Intuit Dome, the new home of the Los Angeles Clippers.
