The Orlando Magic have ruffled some feathers with their choice to fire coach Jamahl Mosley.
After failing to defeat the Detroit Pistons in the first round of the NBA Playoffs, the Orlando Magic wasted no time in firing head coach Jamahl Mosley.
News broke that Mosley had been dismissed from his position on May 4, one day after the Magic fell in Game 7 to the Pistons. Throughout the season, the Magic’s fanbase expressed their displeasure with Mosley’s performance and repeatedly called for his job, and the national media speculated about tension between Mosley and his team, notably with star forward Paolo Banchero.
With Mosley out, reactions to his firing have become a talking point throughout the NBA media landscape, and two personalities to chime in on it recently were Hall of Fame occupants and former Magic players, Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady.
In a recent episode of the Cousins with Vince Carter & Tracy McGrady show, both gave their thoughts on the firing of Mosley.
“And in terms of like, Mose being fired, I understood it,” McGrady said. “I hated it, I hate the firing. Because I think, you know, he built something. For him and Paolo to, I guess, put everything aside; all the whispers that we were hearing between those two, the friction, to put that aside.
“And the way they competed in these playoffs, you know, they lost a 3-1, but, you know, they didn't have Franz [Wagner] for what, three of those games? That’s tough on a team like that.”
While McGrady praised the Magic for taking the Pistons to the brink, he did not let them off easily, especially when it came to their Game 6 collapse.
“But that Game 6, bro, that game six, you know, losing a 24 point lead and missing 23 consecutive shots, that was bad. That was — I don't know how you come back from that. Only way you come back from that, if you win Game 7, and I think that was the nail in the coffin for Mose’s job.”
Carter also provided input on his displeasure with Orlando’s Game 6 collapse being pinned mostly on Mosley by fans on social media.
“I hate to see, you know, to watch and read the comments of people like, all the blame went to Mose on that Game 6," Carter said. ‘Oh, he should have called a timeout. He choose this. He could have done that.’
Yeah, yeah, yeah, but at the same time as players, and it's not all young guys, you have some veteran guys and guys who've been around to know when we missed 10, 12 shots in a row, I'm going to need somebody to run over somebody to get a foul. I'm going to need somebody to go back door something, you know, instead of like it was stagnant. It was guys sitting around players sitting around.”
