Despite numerous injuries to their starting lineup, the Orlando Magic have been competing in the Eastern Conference. The reason why: their star players who are viewed as some of the best young talent in the NBA.
The Ringer updated their ranking of the NBA's top 100 players. Four players from Orlando cracked the list, beginning with Paolo Banchero at No. 32. Banchero is ranked four spots lower than his most recent ranking in Nov. The article highlighted his defining skill.
“Standing at 6-foot-10 and weighing 250 pounds, Banchero combines the size and strength of an old-school power forward with the handle, touch, and scope of a guard,” the article wrote. “That’s today’s high-usage star: an offensively versatile cannonball who complicates the defense’s preferred matchups whenever he steps on the floor.”
The next player on the list is probably the Magic’s strongest candidate for an All-Star spot. Franz Wagner comes in at No. 38, just one spot lower than his most previous ranking.
“A high ankle sprain was the best possible news for the Magic after what looked to be a horrific injury for Wagner — the kind that might have deflated any lingering contending aspirations for a team that’s firmly in the mix out East,” the article added. “Orlando will make do without him for the next month, but at its best, the team leans heavily on Franz’s ability to shape-shift and fill gaps. His unique ability to generate power through his varied strides makes him one of the league’s best drivers, even at 6-foot-10 — his quick decision-making and team-oriented defensive instincts render him indispensable. Whatever final form the Magic take this year, how Wagner looks upon his return will be of considerable influence.”
Desmond Bane comes in next at No. 46, a seven spot increase from his No. 53 ranking in Nov. Despite his slow start, Bane has picked it up amidst the multiple injuries surrounding him in the starting lineup. He has taken on a lead-scoring role and has performed admirably.
“Bane was never going to misfire forever,” the article concluded. “He’s too sharp and stable a shooter for that — one of the most bankable in the entire league over the past five years, which is exactly why Orlando paid a premium to acquire him. That investment is paying off for the Magic after a slowish start, not only in Bane’s work behind the arc but also in all the lanes it opens up for him.”
Rounding out the list for the Magic is Jalen Suggs at No. 56, nine spots higher from his No. 65 ranking in Nov.
