Andrew Cherico and I went on the Full Court Magic podcast to discuss the hiring of Sean Sweeney and much more.
The Orlando Magic are entering a new era of the franchise after hiring San Antonio Spurs assistant Sean Sweeney to become the next head coach.
Sweeney’s hiring will usher in a new staff and way of doing things inside the building, and I went on the Full Court Magic Podcast with my friend and colleague, Andrew Cherico, to discuss Sweeney’s hiring, and Cherico gave his take on it.
"I think you mentioned it best," Cherico said. "If you're talking about teams looking for their next head coach and they want a young and up-and-coming talent, Sean Sweeney checked all of those boxes for the Magic. I mean, you're talking about the organization that he is coming from currently in the NBA finals. I know the Magic would much rather be there right now than hiring Sweeney, but he is there hoping that he can take them to that next level. The Spurs are a top class organization. They have produced nothing but winners for as long as I've been alive, at least. So, I definitely do think the Spurs and that kind of championship connection definitely had some part and play of it.
"And I think it was really cool. I remember you spoke about Jeff Weltman on the podcast over Brandon Kravitz," he added. "You know, he said it was really cool that the Spurs allowed Sweeney to interview with Weltman and kind of get in those meetings, despite them being in the NBA finals and during the time, the Western Conference finals. You said it best, Sweeney is well-respected around the league. The Orlando Magic posted some media quotes from some of the headlining voices in the NBA.
We're talking about Mitch Johnson, current Spurs head coach, Giannis Antetokounmpo, star player on the [Milwaukee] Bucks, Luka Doncic, just so many top-level talents around the league with nothing but good things to say about Sweeney. It kind of has to make you feel good about the direction that the Magic are heading in."
The Magic are banking on Sweeney, who will be a first-time head coach but has well over a decade of experience as an assistant, to help elevate their stars such as Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner and Desmond Bane in the same way that he has elevated Antetokounmpo, Doncic and now Victor Wembanyama.
