Don Strouble of Roundtable Sports covers an array of topics in the latest episode of Full Court Magic.
INTRO: "This episode is going to have more of a solemn tone. Obviously, the season is over. Last time I came to you guys for a full episode, The Magic were in the driver's seat against the Detroit Pistons in their first-round playoff series, and since that time have suffered an epic collapse, fired head coach Jamahl Mosley and now begin a summer of, at least so far, unknowns, and we're going to cover those things today. And as you can see, the title of this episode is End of the Road.
You know, sometimes I struggle with these titles, you know, I think, 'oh, is that too corny?' Is that, you know, too much of a play on words?' This, that, the other. This was the best way I could describe this, and it came to me fairly easily, because that's where we're at. You know, that is where we're at. And so, let's talk about it."
Playoff Collapse and Mosley Fired: "So, the Magic decided to dismiss head coach Jamahl Mosley, ending his tenure with the team after five seasons. He was hired in July 2021, and his tenure comes to an end nearly five calendar years later, after falling in Game 7 to the Detroit Pistons on Sunday. This was, as you all know, a series that The Magic had in the palm of their hands, and just could not find a way to get it done, specifically after Franz Wagner got hurt in the Game 4 win, and that was the only time the Magic were able to get it done without him on the floor.
He suffered that right calf strain, originally thought that it was just some right calf tightness, but the MRI that he received the day after Game 4 concluded that it was a right calf strain. So given everything Franz has dealt with this season, the last thing The Magic were going to do was risk having a calf strain turn into an Achilles tear, because we've seen that far too often, and it wasn't worth the risk. But without him, the Magic just couldn't quite get it done.
You know, I'm not saying he's the whole reason for their success, but he's a steadying presence on offense. When they needed him to be, he guarded Cade Cunningham at an elite level, and really made things hard for him, you know, in those first four games. But, you know, without him on the floor, just too much of the onus fell on Paolo Banchero, Desmond Bane, and I guess you could say Jalen Suggs.
And Jalen was really, offensively, really, really bad in this series, and we'll get to that too. But nothing is more painful for you guys, The Magic faithful out there, than theGame 6 collapse. That was a game that, I mean, you talk about the series being in the palm of The Magic's hand, that was the game."
