The Orlando Magic are undergoing a major change, and Paolo Banchero will undoubtedly be affected.
The Orlando Magic decided to undergo a major change when the front office pulled the trigger on firing coach Jamahl Mosley following the team’s Game 7 loss to the Detroit Pistons.
The loss of Mosley, for Orlando’s longtime core of Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner and Jalen Suggs, means that they will be playing for a new coach for the first time in their NBA career next season, and Hall of Fame guards and former Magic players Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady recently provided their thoughts on Mosley’s firing.
"It's unfortunate," Carter told McGrady. "You know, we see, now, Mosley gone; I'll be interested to see how what direction they go in. You know, you said something last night, which obviously was kind of funny, but it's true now. Even more now you find the coach that matches. But here I'm going to say this. You're starting over again."
"Paolo starting over again," Carter added. "Like you said, they built the camaraderie, they put the differences aside. They figured out.. Mose figured out what works for Paolo, and Paolo figured out how to coexist with the coach."
McGrady lamented the Magic for not being able to execute during their Game 6 collapse against the Pistons, rather than placing the blame on Mosley.
"It ain’t on the coach to make big shots," McGrady said. "The coach ain’t make you only make three shots."
Instead, McGrady believes the Magic need to upgrade the roster.
"Orlando need to get some real players in there," he added. "Because what they have on that team around Paolo; that's not enough. If you're trying to compete in this league in the East with New York, very capable, with Philly, those two young boys are only getting better; Atlanta is coming up, they’re better.
"I just think Orlando, with the supporting cast, is not good."
Carter believes that a new coach will help the Magic, but that it will be important for Banchero to build necessary chemistry with whoever takes the job.
"With a new coach coming in, I think that can happen," Carter said. "You know, Paolo, I think is important for him to sit with the new coach and make they you know, he learns how this coach plays; he learns how Paolo plays. I mean, and we all got to see him on the big stage. So, hopefully they buy it and then they find the supporting cast around him."
