The Orlando Magic officially named San Antonio Spurs associate head coach Sean Sweeney as the 16th head coach in franchise history on Monday, and President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman expressed his excitement in his announcement to have Sweeney fill the role.

Currently, Sweeney and the Spurs are gearing up for the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks, which begins on Wednesday, meaning that Sweeney's introduction to the Magic has been delayed until after the finals are over. However, Weltman joined the Game On show with Brandon Kravitz and Mike Bianchi on Tuesday to talk about the hiring of Sweeney and what makes him so impressive.

"Well obviously we'll have to wait for the finals to finish before we can get Sean out here, but I'm really excited about our fans getting an up close look at him and we'll get him out as soon as we can," Weltman said. "And I know he's eager to finish his season the right way with San Antonio and then join us. But I think the first thing that you notice with Sean is he has like a natural intensity about him. 

"It's not something that he has to try to put on or impress you with," he added. "It's just there. He's very locked in, his focus and his intensity I think kind of like underlies a lot of the way he delivers information, the way he receives information. And beyond that, as a basketball coach, man, his recognition. The instant we watched video and we talked about players and games and teams and his ability to kind of break the game down into small doses that are teachable, that are measurable, that create a through line with players and teams."

Throughout his journey as an assistant coach, Sweeney has worked to develop the likes of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Luka Doncic, and now, Victor Wembanyama. By hiring Sweeney, Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, Desmond Bane and Jalen Suggs get a coach that knows how to work with stars, and Weltman is hoping to achieve a comprehensive program within the organization under Sweeney's leadership.

"And really, Mike, I would say create a program more than just like did you win tonight? Are you developing a program where you can really, like, measure and help define what it is to be a Magic player? And that makes all of our lives easier," Weltman said. "I think Sean has the capability to do a lot of those things. 

"Obviously, he comes in as a rookie, but he's got a lot of experience within his own set of circumstances," he added. "Obviously, associate head coach of a team that's playing in the finals right now. And I think he has a ton of potential."
