Despite a grueling playoff exit, Orlando’s head coach praises his young squad’s defensive identity and Paolo Banchero’s evolution into a postseason force during a transformative year of growth.
On the turning point in the Game 7 loss to Detroit:
"I want to talk about our guys' effort and energy first. They laid it all on the line and fought no matter the circumstances. In that second quarter, we had a couple of empty possessions and misses at the rim. Cade [Cunningham] came down and hit a big three, and that was the momentum swing. In the third, we did a decent job defensively, but we just couldn't find the basket. We couldn't put it in the hole, and that was a big portion of it."
On the post-game message and overall season reflection:
"Gratitude. These guys always found a way this year. They never made excuses or pointed blame; they found a way to come together when we needed to get things done. Win or lose, it’s about how they keep battling. It was a blessing to coach these guys for 82-plus games and see them grow. We have the sixth youngest team in the NBA, and getting this experience in a Game 7 is something they will learn from."
On Paolo Banchero’s performance and the "30-point mark" stat:
"In the playoffs, he finds a way to turn up to another level. His aggression and his will to go get the game are important pieces. Regarding the stat about him scoring 30, he’s doing a lot in those moments to try and put points on the board and get guys involved. You have to give Detroit a ton of credit; they have the top defense in the league and they don't make it easy. They force the hand of 'P' having to do a lot more."
On Jalen Suggs’ struggles and emotional investment:
"He cares so much about his group and his teammates. He wants to do the right thing at all times. His energy, passion, and focus on making his teammates better is what he is for this team night in and night out. We just talked about continuing to focus on how he can keep getting better."
On the five-year journey with this core:
"It’s been an amazing journey watching them grow and communicate. From the moment I started, we said we’re going to be a defensive team, a together team, and we’re going to fight until the final horn. You see the growth in their leadership and their ability to hold each other accountable and look in the mirror when things don't go their way. I’ve seen that over the last five years."
On the support of the organization and fans:
"This organization has done a great job, and our fans have been incredible supporting these guys through all of it. That’s the beauty of this game of basketball and being the head coach of the Orlando Magic."
