Ex-Orlando Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley learned a lot during his time with the Orlando Magic.

In July 2021, the Orlando Magic took a chance on Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Jamahl Mosley to be the franchise’s next head coach and help the team navigate troubled waters.

When Mosley took over, the Magic did not have a franchise player of the future, nor were they close to achieving a winning season. The first season for Mosley was tough, as Orlando could only muster 22 wins under his leadership during the rookie seasons of Franz Wagner and Jalen Suggs. But gradually, things got better.

After selecting Paolo Banchero with the first pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, the Magic improved from 22 wins to 34 wins. Then, in 2023, Orlando won 47 games, the most since the 2010-11 season. In 2023 and the two seasons that followed, Mosley led the Magic to the postseason.

However, after a rocky 2025-26 campaign ended in a crushing defeat for the Magic in the playoffs in which they squandered a 3-1 first-round lead to the Detroit Pistons, Mosley was fired. Now, he will lead the New Orleans Pelicans after signing a five-year deal to become the next head coach.

News of Mosley’s new position with the Pelicans broke on May 18, and since then, he has done his introductory press conference. In a separate interview with Seth Lewis of WWLTV, Mosley talked about one lesson he took from his five years in Orlando as the leader of the roster.

"I think the one thing that I take from Orlando was the process and not skipping steps," Mosley said. "I think starting from the moment that you get guys understanding what your process is going to be every single day, the habits that you build and that continuity that can be created because you're building the habits every single day, what you would say can work here and you can build and look maybe a little differently.

"I think it's always going to boil down to those high levels of communication and continued alignment." he added. "And I think that's the beauty of what Joe [Dumars] has started this out with, is that the alignment of where you're going and what you're trying to to accomplish as a whole organization, that not just falls into what's happening in this building, but what's also happening in this community. The goal for all 30 NBA teams is to hoist the Larry O'Brien to win the championship."
