President Jeff Weltman details moving on from Jamahl Mosley and navigating a looming luxury tax as Orlando searches for a new voice to elevate their defensive core.
Following the Orlando Magic’s Game 7 loss to the Detroit Pistons, President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman held a press conference to address the firing of head coach Jamahl Mosley and the future of the franchise.
On the Firing of Jamahl Mosley
"This morning I met with Coach Mosley and let him know that we were going to be making a change. He handled it with class and gratitude. It's the hardest decision you have to make, especially for someone as talented as Jamal is. We’ve lost in the first round the last three years, and that’s an organizational matter—it’s not on one person—but it just seems like it’s time for a new perspective, maybe a fresh voice."
On the 3-1 Series Collapse
"That’s a gut punch, and that’s going to remain with our team this summer. We were up 3-1 against the number one seed in the East that won 60 games, and Franz [Wagner] got hurt and it altered the series. I don’t want to overreact to the second half of Game 6 the same way I don’t want to overreact to the first half when we were up 22 points. It’s our job to not throw the baby out with the bathwater."
On Team Progress and Offensive Trends
"I think we have gotten better this year. For the last couple years, we’ve been a top-five defensive team and a really poor offensive team. This year—and I say this when healthy—we were top-five defense and top-10 offense. We liked the trend that presented. I don’t want to tear this thing down and dismantle it because of one half."
On the Search for a New Head Coach
"Coaches come in a lot of different shapes and sizes. We want someone who understands where we are on our timeline—that we’ve tried to get past the growth stages of the rebuild. I don't have a 'box' to say we want the next coach to come out of, whether that’s experience or X’s and O’s. We want to have in-depth conversations with people about how they view our team and see things we haven’t seen."
On Facing Competition for Candidates
"Is our job attractive? I do think our job is attractive. People look at us as a young, growing, forward-moving team with talent, chemistry, and a defensive backbone. You can’t try to jump the gun just because another team might hire somebody. Later on, we’ll get more intimate with who our number one choice is."
On Roster Construction and the Luxury Tax
"We know that we’re going to be a tax team next year. We build for the playoffs—positional versatility, physicality, and guys who can elevate their games. Short of acquiring a star player, I do believe the greatest impact you can have on a team is to bring in a new coach. Our challenge this summer is rounding out the roster with veteran guys who are reliable and consistent while being compressed financially."
On the Recurring Injury Issues
"It’s hard to outrun injuries. Franz's injury was a guy landing on his back—it’s not a soft tissue injury. But I also look at the other side: Wendell Carter played 78 games, and Desmond Bane played 82 games, which is a huge outlier for him. We turn over every rock over the summer, from scouting to analytics to medical, to understand if these are patterns or just outliers."
On His Own Contract Extension
"I’m very thankful for the DeVos family and that they’ve believed in the direction of the team. Regarding why the extension wasn't announced in December, that’s probably my fault. I’m pretty close to the vest on that stuff."
On the Message to the Fans
"This is a really bitter taste in our mouth walking away from the playoffs right now. But I hope the takeaway is what we accomplished when we were together. This is a young team; they’re going to get better. We’ve already shown that when we’re together, we can be a pretty elite team. The building was rocking, and we really appreciate them."
