The Orlando Magic do not have a lot of room to work with this summer.

The Orlando Magic made a significant offseason move by firing Jamahl Mosley and hiring Sean Sweeney to be the next head coach of the franchise, and it may be the only significant move that gets made.

After making a blockbuster trade for Desmond Bane in June 2025, the Magic find themselves with no first round picks in the upcoming NBA Draft. Additionally, the contracts of Bane, Franz Wagner and Jalen Suggs paired with Paolo Banchero’s rookie max extension kicking in heavily restricts opportunities for the organization to spend.

This is a reality that President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman is taking into account, and he did not mince words about the situation in a recent appearance on the Game On show with Brandon Kravitz and Mike Bianchi.

"Well, that's always the great unknown," Weltman told Kravitz. "But you're right, we do not have a first round pick. We do not have a lot of money to spend. We do have, you know, free agency issues in front of us. And I've always said, this kind of train is coming at us, and it's getting closer. So, we're going to have some hard decisions to make. So we'll have to connect with other teams and kind of see how they look at our team and, you know, how they value our players.

"One GM today just told me, ‘You guys have a lot more good young players than most teams, so we'll always have interest in talking to you,’" Weltman added. "But, like, what that actually translates to, I really don't know. But we'll go through the process, and obviously, the first part of that is the draft. You know, July is free agency, and then after that our extension windows leading up to opening day."

According to Spotrac, the Magic are roughly $9.3 million over the first apron. Next season, Banchero, Wagner, Bane and Suggs will combine to make $154.8 million, which cuts well into the team’s finances.

Additionally, Anthony Black is available for an extension. After a breakout season, he may end up getting it.

"But honestly, we like our team," Weltman said. "I think we've had this discussion before. We were a game away, and you could say an injury away, from maybe being into the second round and who knows from there. It had been said several times throughout the season, the East is wide open. I think the East is highly competitive, and these are really good teams. And I think it’s going to be a really fun series for all of us to watch.

"But, you know, we like our team. I don't feel like there's a gun to our head to make these dramatic overhauls," he added. "But that being said, we've kind of shown that if the right situation is there to be aggressive, we will. And we also know that we're going to have some hard choices coming at us in the next year. So, you know, we'll have conversations about getting ahead of those conversations, too. But I don't know what that means. We'll have to see."
