The Orlando Magic are one of the most exciting young teams in the league, led by former first pick Paolo Banchero. He's shown superstar potential from the very beginning and continues to prove why he's the right face for the franchise. The All-Star forward has averaged over 20 points per game throughout his young career, but still finds ways to improve on both sides of the court.
Last season was a bit of a setback for Banchero after suffering an oblique injury in the middle of Dec. He ended up missing 36 games, but still averaged new career highs with 25.9 points and 7.5 rebounds in 46 appearances, along with 4.8 assists and shot 45.2 percent from the field, 32 percent from three-point range.
It was a downward year for the Magic, given the injuries to multiple rotational players, but they still managed to qualify for the playoffs. However, the team suffered another first-round exit, but at the hands of the Boston Celtics after five games.
The organization knew that changes were necessary in order to reach new heights. They did exactly that with a blockbuster trade acquiring Desmond Bane, alongside signing Tyus Jones in free agency. A successful offseason for the Magic, with hopes of gunning for a championship.
In a recent episode of "The Brotherhood Podcast," hosted by Duke forward Cam Boozer, Banchero sat with his alma mater and expressed his expectations for the upcoming season.
"I'm excited about the pickups," he said. "We've been in the playoffs the last two years, but two first-round exits. I felt like we needed more experience, guys who have been deeper in the playoffs."
Banchero mentions how there needs to be suffering before success can come into the picture, and how it makes the team hungrier.
"I think it's going to be a big year four," he added.
The Magic are expected to take a significant leap this upcoming season, finish among the top teams in the Eastern Conference, and potentially embark on a deep playoff run. However, the team will go as far as Banchero takes them. He is fully aware of the responsibilities bestowed upon him, especially after signing a supermax contract, but the young prospect doesn't shy away from any of it.
Banchero brings hope to the Magic fan base that the franchise can accomplish something that has yet to be done. He's an upcoming superstar with a strong motor who continues to walk on the path of greatness.
