The Orlando Magic have surged back into rhythm after a slow start to the season, driven largely by how comfortably the lineup has meshed despite Paolo Banchero missing this recent stretch. Now 11-8, the Magic are trending upward and playing closer to the championship level expected before the year began.
Their recent success pushed them up three spots in ESPN’s latest power rankings, landing at No. 14, with the jump credited to strong bench production while navigating injuries.
“Orlando lost for the second time in three meetings to the Celtics,” the article wrote. “But there were some positives to take away from Sunday's loss in Boston. It was the second of a back-to-back after the Magic beat the Knicks in Orlando the day before, and they were still without Paolo Banchero (left groin strain), Wendell Carter Jr. (ankle), and Goga Bitadze (ankle). Still, Orlando cut a 26-point deficit down to six in the final 1:11, getting a glimpse of future potential as Jett Howard and Jase Richardson combined for 36 points in the fourth quarter. This week will test Orlando's defense as the Magic will try to slow down the Pistons in Detroit on Friday.”
After a dominant win over the Philadelphia 76ers, the Magic continue to show steady improvement as the season progresses. Even with a few losses during this stretch, they’ve consistently answered with a win. For coach Jamahl Mosley, the team’s resilience is what stands out most.
“There’s a resiliency about the group – never too high, never too low,” Mosley said. “They keep each other tight in the locker room about what we need to focus on, not listening to the noise, just following our process of how we want to play night in and night out.”
Since the Magic have thrived without Banchero, his return could bring the challenge of reintegrating him without disrupting the chemistry built during this run. Mosley isn’t concerned, noting that Banchero’s defensive mindset should help him slide back in seamlessly.
““He’s watching it, looking at it,” Mosley added. “He’s been the number-one guy talking about how we’ve been defending and getting out and running. That allows him to get easier baskets the same way. As we continue to defend the right way and get stops, we’re able to get out and run and get easy baskets for everyone.”
