The Orlando Magic made blockbuster moves this offseason, sacrificing significant draft capital to acquire elite perimeter shooting guard Desmond Bane. The trade, which included four first-round picks, signals the franchise’s intent to compete immediately while still keeping an eye on long-term success.
The Magic boast one of the youngest starting lineups in the league, even after trading veterans Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Cole Anthony. At 27, Desmond Bane fits perfectly into the youth movement president of basketball operations, Jeff Weltman, is crafting. The goal is keep the “core four” of Bane, Jalen Suggs, Franz Wagner, and Paolo Banchero together for the next few seasons, build chemistry, and chase the franchise’s first NBA championship.
ESPN recently released its “NBA Future” power rankings, projecting team outlooks over the next three seasons. The Orlando Magic were ranked No. 7, praised for their strong core and long-term commitment, but noted as being constrained by limited financial flexibility.
“The Magic traded for Desmond Bane and signed Paolo Banchero to a five-year extension over the summer,” ESPN wrote.
“However, those transactions have Orlando holding steady in this spot from the last ranking,” the article added. “Orlando is maintaining its ranking because it ranks 27th in money and 24th in the draft. In the next three seasons, the Magic are committing $450 million in guaranteed contracts to Bane, Banchero, Franz Wagner and Jalen Suggs. They also have only one future first (2032) that they are allowed to trade in the next seven years.”
Despite having limited draft capital the next few seasons especially first round selections, the Magic committed to developing two young rookies in both their first and second round selection of Jase Richardson and Noah Penda.
Both players demonstrated the ability to make an immediate impact during the regular season, building on strong Summer League performances that highlighted the primary reasons they were drafted: scoring and defensive potential.
With the core four and two rookies in place, the Magic have secured their future for the coming seasons, positioning themselves to contend at the top of the Eastern Conference without needing major trades in the near term.
