Despite the offseason additions, the Orlando Magic will need to rely heavily on their homegrown talent to take the next step toward championship contention. Central to that plan is 2022 No. 1 overall pick Paolo Banchero, who is expected to elevate his game, lead the Magic to a top record in the Eastern Conference, and help the team advance past the first round after consecutive early playoff exits.
Offseason acquisition Desmond Bane has already proven to be the exact fit that President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman envisioned. With his calm, veteran demeanor, Bane seamlessly slides into a starting role alongside Banchero, Franz Wagner, and Jalen Suggs.
On the court, Bane addresses the Magic’s biggest weakness from last season: three-point shooting. Ranked last in three-point percentage, the team now has a 40-percent perimeter shooter in Bane, which not only improves the team’s efficiency but also supports the growth of its young stars. Last season, Banchero often had to play hero ball, taking tough shots because defenses didn’t need to respect the corners. With Bane on the floor, the offense now has a much-needed perimeter threat, opening up the court for everyone.
Not only is Banchero prepared to take the next step on the court, but he is also emerging as a selfless leader off it.
During a recent interview with Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor, Desmond Bane shared that he spent time with Banchero before the season began and was impressed by his mindset, noting that Banchero remains grounded despite the glamour and expectations that come with being a first overall pick.
“We had a team mini camp in Vegas,” Bane said. “So, everybody was there. We went to the fight really good, just to get around everybody, but me and P [Banchero] we spent a lot of time together. Had really good conversations at the dinner we was at, whether it's recovery sessions or whatever. Like, we had very good conversations. And he's going to be a monster.”
“The thing that I like about him a lot is he's very selfless,” Bane added. “Like he just wants to win. I feel like that's rare around like number one picks, young all-stars. Everybody's still trying to make a name for themselves and Chase. He understands winning comes first, and if we win, all that stuff will take care of itself. So I expect a big season out of him, and I think he expects a big season out of himself. More than anything, I could just feel the hunger that he has coming into this season. So I'm super excited to get around him. Happy to be able to complement his skill set.”
