Training camp has just begun for the Orlando Magic, and the injury bug has already made its presence known.
Wednesday marked the second day of training camp for the Orlando Magic, and it was announced that both Anthony Black and Noah Penda had suffered minor injuries.
According to Jason Beede of the Orlando Sentinel, coach Sean Sweeney said Black suffered a minor ankle sprain during the team's voluntary workouts leading up to training camp. In Penda's case, he is dealing with a tweaked hamstring.
According to Sweeney, Black is considered day-to-day, and they are just being smart with his situation and Penda's in an effort to not overwork both players, given that the team is having two practices per day to start training camp. In a video of the media viewing portion of the Magic's practice posted by Beede, Black could be seen standing under the basket, passing to his teammates.
The importance of Black and Penda
It is a good thing that Sweeney and his staff are taking a cautious route with Black and Penda. Last season, Black had a breakout year in which he averaged 15 points per game and starred in a sixth man role on an otherwise struggling bench.
The Magic will need him at his best to provide a scoring boost in a backcourt role, especially as a reserve. Moreover, this is an important season for Black individually, as he plays for a contract extension.
Penda is entering year two and has shown strong improvement since his rookie season. Penda already showed the type of potential he had as a rookie, and now he is looking to be even better.
In 59 games and two starts as a rookie, Penda averaged 3.8 points in 12.8 minutes per game. Over the summer, he slimmed down noticeably and made it clear that he was looking to erase any of the mistakes that he made during his first season in the NBA.
Both Black and Penda have what it takes to create a rangy combination off the bench for the Magic. Both players stand at 6-foot-7, though Penda has more weight on him at 215 pounds versus Black at 200 pounds.
Both players have can bring more size and versatility to a roster that is already predicated on those elements. However, the Magic have struggled mightily with injuries in recent seasons.
Therefore, it is important that Black and Penda make quick, strong recoveries before the preseason and the regular season begin. At Media Day, Sweeney talked about Black's mindset heading into the season.
For Orlando to get to where it wants to go in the upcoming season, it is going to take more luck concerning health than what they have been dealt over the last two years.
