Orlando Magic head coach Sean Sweeney had good things to say about the team's effort on Friday, but there is still more he wants to see.

ORLANDO — The Orlando Magic are winding down their first week of training camp under new coach Sean Sweeney and his staff, and after Friday's practice at the Advent Health Training Center, Sweeney described what the focus of the day was.

Sweeney wanted to ensure that there was a high level of competition as the Magic went through post-defense drills, post-offense drills, iso-defense drills and iso-offense drills. The goal was to see how the team produced some of the finer details in those live-action moments.

Combining elements

During the first few days of training camp, the Magic were undergoing two-a-day practices in which they would spend portions of it focusing on the cerebral and detail-oriented aspects of the game, while other portions were dedicated to physical and contact-heavy drills.

On Friday, Sweeney said the goal was to marry teaching moments and moments of competition. After Sweeney spoke, guard Jase Richardson and forward Tristan da Silva also met with the media to talk about how training camp has been going under their new coach, and they both provided glowing reviews.

To integrate the concept of toughness and the physical nature of the game, the Magic had professional boxer Chris Algieri in the building as a guest to speak to the team. Algieri has been a champion in his own right, and he knows what it takes to battle through adversity to win a title.

While Richardson, da Silva and others on the roster have had good things to say about Sweeney's approach so far, he has also had good things to say about them. Sweeney praised the team's willingness to want to push themselves rather than needing to be pushed.

The communication, in Sweeney's view, has also been strong, which demonstrates the growing trust between him and his players. The Magic are feeling motivated and ready to do what Sweeney asks of them in order to be a successful basketball team, which is foundational to a successful season.

For now, in the early days of training camp that precede the season, Sweeney just wants the group to continue to take steps in the right direction. He praised the execution, and now he wants them to be able to flow from one thing to the next.

Sweeney takes moments to teach, and then he wants to see if the players retain it. He also wants to see if they can do it while competing with one another in practice, and then if they can take that element of competition and elevate it even further to a game setting. Those are the steps that still need to be taken by the Magic in the coming weeks.
