Orlando Magic coach Sean Sweeney had a lot of nice things to say about his players during media day while also underlining the importance of leadership.
ORLANDO — In the midst of a packed AdventHealth Training Center for the Orlando Magic's media day on Monday, Coach Sean Sweeney sat in front of rows of reporters and provided an outline for what a successful team under his leadership will look like.
This is not the first time Sweeney has done this. When he was named the coach of the Magic on June 1, an introductory press conference was held later in the month, and he outlined his vision then. But now, after a full summer of relationship building, there is more to take away from what he is constructing with this organization.
Given Sweeney's position, it is incumbent upon him to ensure that he is getting to know his players on and off the basketball court. Apart from Jalen Suggs, whom Sweeney has known since Suggs was a young kid, there were introductions to be made.
Sweeney wasted no time either, as he made an immediate call to star forward Paolo Banchero upon getting the job. Over the summer, he learned how much Banchero wants to win, and they have kept an open and honest line of communication. The same can be said for others on the team as well, such as Franz Wagner and Desmond Bane.
As it pertains to Wagner, Sweeney admires his cerebral approach and intelligence when it comes to the game. In the case of Bane, Sweeney emphasized his leadership. For center Wendell Carter Jr., he pointed to the effort Carter has put into being a team-first player.
Goga Bitadze, Nikola Vucevic and Anthony Black also got their flowers from Sweeney, which further demonstrates an expression of team-wide confidence.
Leadership
Most of the Magic's core has been together for years, but most of them are still just reaching their prime. They have gone through trials and tribulations, but there is still a lot to learn.
Sweeney, who is a first-time head coach, will be learning right alongside them. In his view, attention to detail and consistently upholding the right habits and a high standard.
In addressing this topic, Sweeney pointed back to Bane, who is a player whom Sweeney believes backs up what he says with actions. Across the board, Sweeney needs that from the whole team.
The potential is there, and if this group can lead tangibly and intangibly for one another, then they will find success. Nothing about it will be easy, especially in the new Eastern Conference landscape, but it will be worth it.
