The Orlando Magic may get creative in order to improve the roster.
The Orlando Magic have constructed a solid young team in recent years which has led to consistent postseason appearances. However, they have not won a playoff series since 2010.
The Magic’s front office made an aggressive move to trade for Desmond Bane in June 2025, and while his first season with the organization yielded strong results, Orlando still finished in eighth place in the Eastern Conference and lost again in the first round of the playoffs.
Now, with less money to spend, the Magic have to get creative over the summer to address roster flaws if they want to improve. The hiring of Sean Sweeney as their new head coach signifies a desire to get better. Now, additional new faces will be needed to complete that transformation.
Recently, NBA insider Mark Stein talked with Zach Lowe about what Orlando might do.
"They brought in Sean Sweeney as their new coach," Stein said. "Are they going to let…Do they want to see how this group meshes with the new coach before they really consider further drastic changes? Now look, it wouldn't surprise me if they make at least one trade because they do need more shooting."
"They can become interesting, I think, very quickly," Lowe added. "They have a lot of players and if they pull it off, something off nice, not like a huge blockbuster, but if they pull something off, I think they could become one of the more interesting teams next season."
Currently, the Magic are roughly $9.3 million over the first apron threshold and $3.6 million below the second apron, making their options limited unless they are willing to part with other roster pieces.
In a recent episode of the Full Court Magic podcast, Andrew Cherico provided me with a couple of names the Magic could target if or when they figure out how to lessen the burden of their financial situation.
"I do think the Magic could use some of that low salary cap extension money, mid-tier level money to sign some potential impact players in free agency too, that comes to my mind immediately," Cherico said. "I think you want to continue to get more guard scoring and perimeter depth, Tim Hardaway Jr. maybe, or maybe even Gary Trent."
For the Magic, adding additional 3-and-D players with size could be beneficial for depth, given their shooting and injury struggles in recent years, which is something I emphasized on the show.
"Yeah, I think that wing defenders, especially in the playoffs, make or break a team," I said.
