ORLANDO — Over two weeks after being named the next head coach of the Orlando Magic, Sean Sweeney had his introductory press conference on Thursday at AdventHealth Training Center.

For Sweeney, who is a first-time head coach, the culture he builds will be paramount, and he detailed the foundation the Magic will stand on under his leadership.

"I love the game," Sweeney said. "I'm a competitor, I want to do things with integrity, and I want to make sure that we are connected in how we play. That's going to shape how we act every day. Our behaviors are going to be shaped upon our values. We're going to be prepared, we're going to be attentive, and that's going to be active attention."

Among the players in attendance for Sweeney’s press conference were forwards Jonathan Isaac and Jamal Cain, who sat in the front row to listen to what he had to say, and Sweeney directed a message at them.

"So, I'm going to listen to you guys as much as I talk to you," Sweeney said. "Now how I talk to you may be different than how I listen to your [explative], but I'm going to talk to you and listen."

"We're going to lead with purpose," Sweeney added. "We're not going to react, but we're going to lead with intention, and we're going to be consistent. I want to be the most consistent person I can, I want to be consistent every day I come in this building, and that's how we plan to be as a team."

Sweeney is coming off a season with the San Antonio Spurs in which he served as the associate head coach on Mitch Johnson’s staff. In his role, which largely centered on his responsibility of running the defense, the Spurs made it to the NBA Finals for the first time since winning it all in 2013-14. Under Sweeney, they posted the third-best defensive rating in the regular season (110.4) and the second-best rating in the playoffs among the 16 participating teams (105.6).

According to Sweeney, the standard that will be set in the building will remain high, and the internal nature of it will be the only thing the Magic follow in that regard.

"There's going to be an expectation that's high, the bar is going to be set high, and we plan on meeting that bar," Sweeney said. "We're going to do what matters, and we're going to do things at a level we want to do each and every day. Not what other people think, but what we want. 

"And what we do matters," he added. "But how we do it matters most. No job too big, no job too small. That's who we're going to be as a team, and that's who I'm going to be as a coach. So, with that, I want to say thank you. I'm very grateful to be here."
