Winning the 2022 draft lottery secured Paolo Banchero and redefined the franchise, yet postseason stagnation now fuels speculation that Orlando’s cornerstone star could eventually seek an exit.

Four years ago today, the trajectory of the Orlando Magic changed forever. On May 17, 2022, the franchise won the NBA Draft Lottery for the first time since 2004, defying the odds to secure the No. 1 overall pick and eventually select foundational superstar Paolo Banchero.

The historic win marked a monumental shift for the organization, representing the first time the Magic had moved up from their slotted lottery position since 1993, the legendary year the front office beat the odds to land Chris Webber before executing a blockbuster draft-night trade for Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway. By jumping into the top spot in 2022, Orlando broke a nearly two-decade drought without the top pick, instantly accelerating their rebuilding timeline and establishing the cornerstone of the current roster.

Despite that franchise-changing lottery night, the Magic have been unable to translate lottery luck into postseason advancement, failing to exceed expectations over the last three seasons due to consecutive first-round exits. Despite the underwhelming team results, Banchero has developed exactly as the Magic had hoped, cementing his status as one of the league's elite young scorers.

Over his four-year career, Banchero has averaged 22.3 points and 7.4 rebounds per game, earning an All-Star nod and winning the 2022–23 NBA Rookie of the Year award. Now, the definitive objective for the Magic front office is to build a winning core around him to contend for a championship before frustration settles in regarding the team's postseason stagnation.

One Orlando Magic Superstar Could Request a Trade this Offseason

Despite the Orlando Magic battling inconsistencies over the past three seasons, they have been able to rely on homegrown superstar Paolo Banchero. The Duke product was handed the keys to the franchise after being drafted No. 1 overall in 2022. However, despite Banchero developing into an elite scorer, the Magic have failed to advance past the first round of the playoffs. With the lack of results leading to the firing of coach Jamahl Mosley, some analysts predict Banchero could eventually seek an exit.

Bleacher Report recently predicted Banchero could be one of the next premier superstars to request a trade, citing the lack of progress the team has made over the last few seasons.

“The Magic have had four seasons now to figure out whether the Banchero-Franz Wagner combo can work together,” Bleacher Report wrote. “The jury is either still out, or it has already returned an unfavorable verdict. Orlando has, to this point at least, peaked at pretty good: consistently posting win totals in the 40s and then getting knocked out in the opening round. Banchero isn't waving the white flag just yet, but he's clearly uninterested in continuing this Groundhog Day existence. When pressed whether the Magic were built to win big after they blew a 3-1 lead against the Detroit Pistons, he signaled exactly zero hope.”

‘"I want to say yes, but this is the third straight time we haven't gotten out of the first round," Banchero told reporters. "So, if you are going off the last three years, the answer is no. ... Honestly speaking, I can't say we're good enough to be in the FInals or the Eastern finals because the last three years, we've had the same result. So, that's your answer."’
