Despite deep front-office ties and trade deadline inquiries, Orlando’s status as a rising young squad may fall short of the "true contender" label the two-time MVP demands.

With offseason rumors underway, the Giannis Antetokounmpo sweepstakes are once again in full effect. A major question for the Orlando Magic is how they can advance past an annual first-round knockout, and one potential answer lies in the trade market. The Magic have been linked to a potential deal with the Milwaukee Bucks due to the longstanding relationship between President Jeff Weltman and senior advisor John Hammond, the connection of originally drafting Antetokounmpo in 2013, as well as reports that Orlando inquired about the two-time MVP at the trade deadline.

As reports of an Antetokounmpo trade become increasingly realistic, the question remains: Do the Magic fit his criteria? Bleacher Report suggests that Orlando may not yet be a significant enough contender to attract the superstar, despite a roster featuring multiple young star talents.

“The Milwaukee Bucks are again accepting trade offers for Giannis Antetokounmpo,” Bleacher Report wrote. “And this time, they really mean it. With just one guaranteed year left on his contract (2027-28 player option), the two-time MVP will have significant leverage over where he winds up. The Bucks have to do what's best for the franchise, but any team acquiring him without receiving his stamp of approval isn't going to fork over the moon.”

Bleacher Report notes that The Athletic’s Sam Amick believes Antetokounmpo only wants to join a true contender if traded from the Bucks, which hurts the Magic’s chances.

“This gives Eastern Conference suitors an automatic leg-up,” the article added. “Giannis doesn't have a ton of interest in journeying westward, according to Sam Amick of The Athletic—presumably because he has looked at the depth charts in Oklahoma City and San Antonio. We can apparently narrow down the field even further, too. Amick adds that Giannis only has eyes for "true" contenders.  That's a potentially tough break for the Brooklyn Nets, and if we're being honest, the Orlando Magic and Miami Heat.”

“Some of the prospective destinations Giannis would approve are bad news for the Bucks (New York Knicks),” the article said. “Others aren't so bad (Cleveland Cavaliers). A select few are complicated as hell (Boston Celtics). Rest assured, though, Giannis will be shipped somewhere inside the East.”
