Sapped by injuries and sloppy turnovers, Orlando struggled to match Toronto’s physicality. Assistant coach Sean Sweeney demands better ball security and defensive communication ahead of Friday’s rematch.

The Orlando Magic's inconsistencies continue as they fell 129-99 in ugly fashion in the first of two road games against the Toronto Raptors.

The Magic struggled mightily without forward Paolo Banchero and guard Jalen Suggs as the injury bug continues to strike Orlando.

The problems began with forward Franz Wagner's struggles, as he shot just 4 of 11 from the field, scoring 15 points while committing seven turnovers. The Raptors took advantage of Orlando's sloppy play, led by Scottie Barnes, who scored 28 points, and RJ Barrett, who added 25.

Head coach Sean Sweeney emphasized that Wagner did a few things well but needs to clean up his game overall.

Sweeney acknowledged that Wagner experienced some difficult possessions against Toronto's defensive pressure but praised his willingness to attack, particularly early in the game. He emphasized that Wagner showed positive stretches to build on while stressing the importance of improving ball security and limiting turnovers.

"I thought he had a couple plays that were tough,” Sweeney said. “Certainly, but he did a good job of attacking, especially early, and there's some things in there that he can build on. But we've got to take care of that ball a little bit better."

Sweeney pointed to Orlando's lack of physicality and communication as key defensive issues throughout the game. He credited Toronto for aggressively attacking the paint and taking advantage of those breakdowns. He stressed that the Magic must improve their defensive intensity and communication to prevent similar struggles.

Things took a turn for the Magic in the second quarter when the Raptors outscored them 37-28. From there, Orlando was unable to recover or find its rhythm.

One of the few bright spots for the Magic in the loss was Tristan da Silva, who scored 20 points while converting four of his five attempts from 3-point range. Da Silva continues to shoot with confidence, having the green light from Sweeney, and the Magic need his scoring contributions with multiple stars sidelined.

Sweeney praised da Silva's aggressive approach, emphasizing the importance of playing to his strengths while maintaining balance offensively. He believes that type of assertiveness benefits the entire team and was encouraged by da Silva's performance.

He also credited Toronto's aggressiveness on the offensive glass for creating additional scoring opportunities. He emphasized that Orlando must improve its rebounding fundamentals, particularly making contact with opposing players, boxing out and pursuing the ball to finish defensive possessions.

The Magic fell to 1-3 this season and will face the Raptors again in Toronto on Friday, Oct. 30.
