After the Orlando Magic suffered a franchise record 52-point loss to the Toronto Raptors on Sunday, the first thing coach Jamahl Mosley did at the postgame podium was blame himself.
“You know, I got to do a better job preparing them for what they were going to see tonight,” Mosley said. “You know, we talked a little bit about it, but probably not enough. I've got to have them prepared for the physicality of the game, you know, prepared for how much they were going to grab hold and get us off of our spots.
You know, that's on me,” he repeated. “I got to do a better job there with this group to make sure they're prepared in the right way, knowing exactly the sense of urgency that Toronto was going to play with having guys out, the sense of urgency that they were going to play with. So, that's – I've got to do a better job for this group there.”
The Magic struggled in every facet of the game and allowed the Raptors to conduct a 31-0 run, the largest in the play-by-play era of the NBA. The Magic also allowed 28 turnovers for 37 points.
“You know, they do a great job of getting you off your spot,” Mosley said. “Their sense of urgency, their physicality, them hitting and, you know, moving you off your positioning. That was a big portion of it, getting to our spots earlier, knowing exactly how they were going to play.
“And just, you know, we just got to regroup, bounce back from this one and find a way to get a game on against Phoenix.”
The Magic finished the game shooting 37.8% from the field and 23.7% from 3-point range. They also managed only 20 assists. Conversely, the Raptors shot 57.4% from the field and 44.8% from the perimeter while racking up 41 assists while only turning the ball over 11 times.
When asked if the team is lacking a sense of urgency, Mosley repeated himself.
“Again, I'll tell you exactly what it is,” he said. “I got to make sure I do a better job for this group to get them and put them in the position to know exactly what they're going to face on a night-to-night basis, especially with the last nine games, now eight games, coming down the stretch.
“And that's us as a group, that we will go look at it, we'll talk about it, we'll make sure we practice it and make sure we get the job done, knowing you're going to see similar games coming down the stretch.”
The Magic return home to host the Phoenix Suns and Atlanta Hawks in a back-to-back slate on Tuesday and Wednesday.
