The Orlando Magic are winding down the regular season in the best way possible.
The Orlando Magic cruised past the Chicago Bulls on Friday, 127-103 for their fifth-straight win. Afterward, coach Jamahl Mosley took the time to praise his team after a rocky start.
“I think, you know, once we started to take care of the ball a little bit better, you know, from that first quarter on, I think that was the best part of it,” Mosley said. “Not playing with the basketball, not being too loose with it.”
The Magic did not play a disciplined brand of basketball in the first quarter as they went on to have more turnovers (nine) than assists (seven). However, they still won the first period by a score of 28-26 and managed to clean things up from there.
Mosley was also critical of how many points in the paint Orlando allowed despite winning the battle, 68-54.
“We talked about being able to pack the paint,” he said. “Don't love that they had 54 points in the paint, so we've got to do a better job there. But, you know, our guys' ability just to continue to keep the lead, hold the lead and not let it go.”
The Magic continued to improve throughout the night, and after a 35-point third quarter, they owned a 20-point lead heading into the fourth. During the winning streak, Orlando has found a way to execute its gameplan in the second half, and Mosley attributes that to a key factor.
“Their communication to each other and their understanding of exactly what we need to do,” Mosley said. “You talk about when you have a team down, keep them down. You know, it's not time to play with the game. It's time to just continue to dominate the simple.
“You know, whatever is working, stick with that and keep going to it,” he added. “Their communication on the floor, what they saw, the plays that they needed to run, the defenses we need to have.”
With only one game remaining in the regular season and postseason aspirations on the line, it is a level of communication that Mosley places great emphasis on.
“It's huge,” he said. “It's huge because as we get into the postseason, you know, it's going to be a lot of them on the court communicating to each other, holding themselves to that standard, understanding how they communicate with us, how they communicate with each other. It's big for this entire group.”
