ORLANDO — The Orlando Magic will host the Sacramento Kings with a chance to snap their six-game winning streak on the line. Before the game, Magic coach Jamahl Mosley discussed several topics, including the availability of Jalen Suggs.
“He's available,” Mosley said regarding Suggs.
Mosley also discussed the effort from Jamal Cain, who scored 17 points in his first NBA start in a loss against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday.
“You know, I've said this before, when he got converted over from the two-way to the standard contract — just his care factor, his appreciation for the game,” Mosley said. “He's not taking any of it for granted. You know, you talked about that Cleveland game, what he did, and they were just all the little things within the game, offensive rebound, diving on the floor, going after loose basketball.
“That's appreciation for the game. You don't know how many opportunities you get to play, and I think that's what he's seen, that's what he knows, and that's the mentality you have to have every time you step on the floor, because you don't know. And I think you know, the more you can have that thought process, the harder you'll play, and the better you'll be.”
The Magic will enter Thursday’s contest as the 10th seed in the Eastern Conference. With the losses racking up and time running out to secure a postseason spot, Mosley and the team are trying to balance adhering to their process while securing good results.
“You know, you're looking for the results, but you can't abandon who you are to get them,” Mosley said. “You know, I think that's it. That's why we keep talking about the defense and where it's gone the last two games. You know, 130 plus against Cleveland. 128 against Indiana.
“You know, those things are things that we have to make sure we clean up,” he added. “And, you know, obviously you want to come away with the W and on the other side of that column, but we've got to make sure we're doing it the right way. And that's, you know, our standard is our defense.”
The Kings enter the Kia Center with a 19-54 record and last place in the Western Conference. Sacramento has a roster that has been ravaged by injuries, as Russell Westbrook, Zach Lavine, Keegan Murray and Damontas Sabonis are all sidelined. DeMar DeRozan will be available, but the Magic largely have a chance to take advantage of a beaten and battered squad whose season is all but over.
However, Monday’s loss to the Indiana Pacers may serve as a cautionary tale for Orlando. The Pacers came to Orlando with the worst record in the Eastern Conference and were losers of 16-straight games — a franchise record. Yet the Magic lost, 128-126.
