MIAMI — The Orlando Magic will visit the Miami Heat on Saturday in the final regular season meeting of the two teams. It is a game with significant implications.
The Magic currently lead the season series against Miami, 4-0, and a win would secure a regular season sweep. Additionally, Orlando will look to put some space between itself and the No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference and the No. 6 seed Heat with 17 games remaining in the regular season.
Before the game, Magic coach Jamahl Mosley talked about the type of atmosphere this kind of matchup creates.
“Yeah, I mean it's a great, great experience for our guys,” Mosley said. “Playing these guys basically now for the seventh time, knowing what they're capable of doing and knowing what the games have been, it is the playoff-type atmosphere and I think the guys know that and they understand that and the small details in a game like this really do matter.”
The Magic are on a six-game winning streak and have won nine of their 12 games since returning from the All-Star break. A lot of their success has been attributed to hard-nosed defense that has been improved since returning from the break.
“It's big for us,” Mosley said. “Being able to get the stops to get out and run to get early easy baskets, I think that that allows us to, you know, to play a little bit more free. The ball moves, the ball pops when you get those stops and us converting on the other end is the big key as well for that.”
Another key component of Orlando’s success has been the production of its role players like Tristan da Silva, who is coming off a career-high 26 points against the Washington Wizards.
“Gigantic” was the word Mosley used to describe the importance of the team’s role players.
“I think it's because everybody knows the tendencies at this point,” he added. “You know, the sets guys run, you know exactly what the guys are doing and how they play, so it's so important that all the little things, the guys that to step in off the bench have to be ready to go and the things that they do, which will be some of the little things, are going to be very important.
The extra offensive rebound, the extra pass, getting on the floor for a loose ball, defensive rebounding, all those small things in a game like this matter.”
Mosley also expressed his pleasure with the facilitation the Magic are displaying.
“Yeah, the guys continue to trust and I think that's a, you know, product of us being able to get stops to get out and run and just finding the open man and I think that's been a big key for our group to continue to, you know, stick with that plan.”
