The Orlando Magic snapped their six-game losing streak on Thursday, and the effort provided by Jamal Cain served as a significant contribution.
The Orlando Magic finally snapped their six-game losing streak with a 121-117 win over the Sacramento Kings on Thursday and, once again, Jamal Cain played a big role.
Cain scored 11 points off the bench while hitting five of his six attempts from the field and his lone attempt from 3-point range. After the game, he talked about how it felt to get back in the win column.
“Super satisfying,” Cain said. “Knowing the struggles we just went through in these past games, The NBA is hard to win in, so man, any way we can get a win, we need it, we want it, and it just feels good, man, to come out with a victory.”
Cain took the time to praise Paolo Banchero, who notched 30 points in the win, his third-straight game of achieving at least that many points.
“One of the best players I've played with so far in the league,” Cain said. “Just the attention he brings to free up other guys puts us in the right positions to be successful. He's just a great player, man, it's a testament to just who he is.”
Cain recently had his contract converted from a two-way deal to a standard NBA deal, and his commitment to hustle and execution played a large role in his elevated status. After Thursday’s game, Cain talked about the impact that he had in the win.
“Growing up, I was like never like one of the guys that just had the ball in their hands,” Cain said. “I was always playing off other guys, and I just credit just, you know, myself with just how hard I play.
“Like, I don't care if I have the ball or not, I'm just trying to make the extra effort plays, you know, to help the team be successful, but yeah, that's always been me.”
In four of his last five games, Cain has scored in double figures, with his season high coming in a loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday in which he scored 17 points in his first start for the Magic.
Despite the recent losing streak and the postseason closing in, Cain is feeling comfortable.
“I'm comfortable for sure,” Cain said. “Like I said, all the work that I put in prepared me for this moment, but I will say this is the hardest part for me, speaking right now, I just want to hoop, that's it.”
Given his background and what it has taken to get to this point in his career, Cain possesses an underdog mentality.
“A lot, man,” Cain said about the pride he takes in his effort. “Like, I was an underdog, I didn't get drafted, I had to work my way up into this league, man, and so every day I feel like I'm proving myself, so if that's diving on the floor, if that's, if I'm tired, tired as hell, sorry, but I still need to crash, you know what I mean, I still have to do my job to make sure the team win games.”
