Orlando Magic's Jeff Weltman Opens up About Big Decision cover image

Orlando Magic president of basketball approached a crucial topic during Thursday's press conference.

ORLANDO — Throughout the Orlando Magic’s struggles this season, fans have taken to social media to call for the job of coach Jamahl Mosley.

During a press conference on Thursday following the 3 p.m. NBA Trade Deadline, Magic president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman shot down frustration and skepticism while reinforcing his belief in Mosley. He also doubled down on the latter’s job security for the remainder of the season.

“Jamahl has our full support, and Jamahl is our coach for the rest of the season,” Weltman said. “So, it's not a matter of— like I know there's a lot of chatter out there and stuff — it's not one person. That said, this is a basketball team. It's a basketball organization and it's a group effort.”

Mosley is in his fifth season at the helm on the Magic’s sideline, and after consecutive playoff appearances, expectations became higher than ever after the organization mortgaged its draft capital along with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Cole Anthony to acquire Desmond Bane.

This season has featured injuries to key players paired with stretches of inconsistencies that has put the Magic’s head just above water in the Eastern Conference.

“We've got to get better,” Weltman added. “And I can tell you one thing, I know Mose is going home every night, looking himself in the mirror and not sleeping and trying to figure out how to do this thing, and how to, you know, get us back on track, and I know the players are doing the same thing.”

Weltman also directed his attention to frustrated fandom.

“There's a lot of people that are frustrated and that care greatly about this. And, you know, we feel the weight of the fans frustration. You know, let me say that, when I hear a lack of urgency or this and that, it's like, I don't sleep, you know, I mean, we got to get this thing right. And I'm confident that we will.”

Before Thursday’s game against the Brooklyn Nets, Mosley addressed Weltman’s comments with a feeling of gratitude.

“I think it means a lot, you know, in this business, in this industry, where coaches do become revolving doors,” Mosley said. “And that's the reality of it, and we know what we sign up for in that regard.

But to know that Jeff and I and this organization are aligned with what we want to have done with this group and this team and how we need to play.”

Orlando kicked off a four-game home stand that will lead into the All-Star break with a convincing win over the Nets after losing consecutive games to the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder. In the win, Jalen Suggs recorded his first career triple double, which provided a good ending to a difficult day for the team.

With Mosley remaining in place and the deadline in the past, the Magic can only make the most of the season from here on out.
