The Orlando Magic were able to outlast a historic performance by Cooper Flagg to defeat the Dallas Mavericks.
The Orlando Magic were able to overcome 51 points from Cooper Flagg in an offensive shootout with the Dallas Mavericks on Friday for a 138-127 win.
Orlando’s scoring was powered by Wendell Carter Jr., who notched a season-high 28 points that led his team to the finish line. After the game, he talked with the media about the win.
“Yeah, we stayed consistent on the offensive end,” Carter said. “You know, we relied on our process over our results. And the results came together. So, it was a good offensive game for us. You know, defensively, we could do a little bit of a better job of locking in on a guy like Coop.
Coop did a really good job tonight,” Carter added. “You know, he just stayed relentless throughout the whole game. But for the most part, I think we just did a really good job of sticking to our game plan, playing physical, and that being that.”
Carter’s 28 points came from an efficient shooting night in which he went 8-16 from the field, 2-3 from 3-point range and 10-10 from the free throw line. He had plenty of help in the win, as all of the starters reached double figures.
The Magic also received 19 points from Tristan da Silva off the bench, and they shot 56% from the field and 53.8% from the perimeter.
“That's the beauty of this team,” Carter said. “I think from top to bottom, we got guys who can go get it any night. So, we play free, we play open, we play as one unit.
“I think we're one of the most dangerous teams in the league. If we can continue to do that for these last couple games, you know, be in a good spot going into the playoffs, it will give us a really good chance.”
According to Jason Beede of the Orlando Sentinel, the Magic are now 12-4 in games where Carter scores 17 or more points this season, the team is also 9-1 in the 10 games where it has scored 130-or-more points this season.
“I give a lot of credit to my teammates,” Carter said. “You know, we just made reads.
And we just trusted one another. Not only just me, but, you know, everybody had a chance to, you know, get some good looks tonight.
“So, that's a hell of an offensive game for us, offensive night for us for sure.”
Carter also continued to praise Flagg after the 19-year-old became the youngest player in NBA history to score at least 50 points.
“You know, Cooper. Cooper's one of those guys,” Carter said. “He's going to be in this league for a long time. You know, tonight showed how talented he is as a player. Yeah, I think the sky's the limit for that kid. You know, he continues to work, continues to find his groove in this league.
“He's going to be one of the best to play.”
